i have seen the kits that you can use to make your internal CD and DVD-ROMs an external drive, but i was wondering if there is a similar kit or solution out there to make your DVD-ROM a stand-alone player that you could just plug into a TV (or stereo for the CD-ROM). i have some extra drives laying around since i have upgraded my PC from time to time and was looking for a way to put them to use.

also, if there's not a ready-made kit, what would it take to build one? i am not worried about the cost or size, i am just curious as to how doable it would be. thanks in advance.

i was having the same thoughts, actually there are a few projects already available. there are a few for tivo like Linux based players, which is even better http://www.freevo.org/ and http://www.mythtv.org/ also , i was thinking of a way to incorporate movix http://movix.sourceforge.net/ t ohave a divx player. on the hardware side , you would need a tv out card (some graphics cards default to the TV out if a monitor signal is not in place , like the geforce series, and can be pretty cheap) a small hard drive (large if you wanted to store movies) and a relatively fast CPU. i think a Linux based machine with a script to boot movix or some of the other software. You can get movix on a auto boot CD, but this is more hassle as you will have to remove the CD and intervene with the key board (not too good :p) this way does let you have NO hard drive thought , which could be helpful to others.
I hope you get were you want to with this , and if i succeed i will Post here.
