I'm having problems backing up POTC with DVDSrink.

At first I thought it was because I was trying to cut out junk (trailers, logos, ect) with IfoEdit using 2Cool's guides. So I decided to just do a strait backup with DVDShrink. But that isn't working either.

What happens is I put the burned DVD+RW in my Apex-500W and it appears to start playing (screen turns black, on-screen display says play) but after a few seconds it goes back to the Apex startup screen and the LCD just says Stop.

For the strait backup I just used DVDShrink and burned the files with Nero 6. For my other attempts I tried using image tool to make an image and DVDDecrypter to burn. Either way I get the same behavior.

Has anyone had any success using DVDShrink on this title?

EDIT: forgot to mention PowerDVD and IfoEdit's Play DVD do not have any problems with the resulting files/image, just my standalone.

Sounds like a new form of copy protection! Perhaps software will have to be updated for it.

I have successfully backed up POTC using Shrink and Nero 6. I was only interested in the main movie only, so maybe that's the difference. One thing I did see was multiple copies of some scenes, which I think has to do with the 'selected commentaries' feature. I deleted these and just kept the largest file, which is the complete movie.

Successfully played on 3 different DVD players. It could just be your Apex doesn't like it of course....

This sounds suspiciously like the issues I used to have when I forgot to do Get VTS Sectors. My player would say 'reading', indicating it was okay with the media and the burn, but then it would immediately display 'stop'.

I was under the impression the DVDShrink was immune to this issue, but perhaps it's not.

Doesn't help you but I was able to back this up with IC8 no problem.
I'll maybe try shrink later tonite.

I backed up POTC with DVDShrink 3.0 beta 5 movie only with no problems. Of course, you should always do a "Get VTS Sectors" when you are done with any rip manipulation. This insures that the rip will play fine in standalone players, or at least any that I have tried.

Then I decided I wanted to have a perfect copy, so I did it over with DVD2DVD/CCE and the results are outstanding. :)

Thanks for the replies.

@DonBerg
It could be, but I doubt it. The DVD structure is complicated so perhaps that is the issue.

@mosgeo
I also did a movie only backup. I didn't try it in my standalone because I was pretty sure it would work. since it was basicly ditching the original disc layout. The problem is it doesn't keep the Keira Knightley and Jack Davenport commentary (or the Jerry Bruckheimer bits), which only shows up on select scenes.

@Kedirekin
If it is something messed up with VTS Sectors it would be something that IfoEdit can't correct because my first few attempts were followed by some IfoEdit usage and I ran VTS Sectors several times.

@The Edge
I started IC8 before I went to bed last night and now I'm burning the image. We'll see if my player likes it.

UPDATE: looks like my Apex doesn't like IC8's copy either. Perhaps it's my player.

@snidely
I was tempted to do a CCE backup of just the movie, but I would lose the Knightley/Davenport and Bruckheimer commentaries. I suppose that wouldn't be a deal breaker, but it would be nice to be able to keep them. Since IC8 did work either I may just do that instead.

I just removed the Bruce almighty clip and the DTS sound in IC8.
Works ok. :confused:
Did it play ok in WinDVD etc?

I should have clarified that I was using the R1 version.

With the IC8 copy I am getting a WinDVD MFC error. This occurs after the FBI and Disney logos, where the trailers (that I removed) would have been. I tried it with both the burned +RW and the mounted IC8 image.

But this could just be a WinDVD problem as I remember getting that error frequently before. I don't use WinDVD that often because it's a buggy install (even upgrading to 5.0 didn't help). WinDVD plays the DVDShrink version without a problem though.

I backed-up POTC using:

DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5
Image Tool Classic .90 Build 5
DVD Decrypter V. 3.1.6.0

Verbatim DataLife DVD+R

I ripped main movie only and ended up with the compression at approximately 15%. It plays without any problems on my Sony DVPNS725P stand alone.

Burn a DVD-R instead of a DVD-RW. My Apex 500-W does that exact thing with ALL RWs, not just POTC.

I'm thinking of doing just that. The reason is because my +RW (the only one I have, it came with the drive) has horrible errors on the last 10% of a burn. And often with these disney titles (which I seem to have the most problems with) they put the feature in VTS_01 and the trailers and logos (fbi warning, ect) in higher VTS_s. This means the trailer and logos are at the end of the disc so that even if they are properly removed the burn errors could cause playback errors on startup, I assume.

When I first burned the +RW it played fine, but after the first burn I have always encountered errors near the end of the disc.

At the very least, I need to get decent RW media to test my encodes.

EDIT: I just wanted to add that after more experience with similar discs this was the source of the problem.

My experience in backing up POTC (Region 2, 2-disc set)was that to keep EVERYTHING on the DVD I let Shrink do the usual analysis and it came up short (i.e. bit of red on the bar).
Clcik on Backup and a warning box appears stating it is too big to fit on DVD-R, ignore this and continue.
Once it has been shrunk, select files from menu and RE-SHRINK IT.
After the analysis it fits PERFECTLY and there is no discernable loss even viewing on a 28-inch widescreen TV.

Have Fun

I use DVD-shrink but would consider dvdxcopy....the problem I have is that I cannot find out a way to backup the dvd-rom features. For example, if I try to backup Pirates of the Carribean, I have no problem at all getting it on a disc with DVD-shrink (though it does compress a bit too much even with selective compression streams for me)...nevertheless, I found that I cannot access the dvd-rom features of the disc on any of my computers. Is there something different I need to do or do I need to use something like dvdxcopy? I have searched extensively on the net, but if this question has already been answered, it is certainly eluding me and I would appreciate some insight.

Thanks,
Acilec.

Use AutoShrinkIso to Transcode with DVDShrink and include the DVD Rom Content.

See Site Below.

DVDShrink doesn't copy the DVD-ROM features for you. It only processes ('shrinks') the files in the VIDEO_TS folder.

Getting the DVD-ROM features is deceptively easy. You just copy them to the destination directory using windows explorer. Note that you may have to shrink the VIDEO_TS contents a little more to make room for the DVD-ROM files.

Didn't realize it was quite that easy...I've burned quite a few without the features and kept wondering why I couldn't bring them up...now I know...

I got it figured out, how to do it with dvdshrink without reauthoring the disc.

If you cut out all the french dialogue, and all the captions, and all the directors dialogue, and everything "french" you will cut out just enough to let shrink do its magic.

This way you can keep all the menus, and still have a good looking picture.

The way that this disney disc is structured makes me wonder why I even bother with this one.

JH Doesn't hurt to do Deep Analysis for a better quality. ;)

I still have this on my todo list because I wasn't happy with DVDShrink's reslults and Big3 fails to retain the "select commentaries". Perhaps with a bit of extra work I could get the Nemo method to work. But the problem with that is that if I rip PCG_1 (the whole movie) it doesn't contain the select commentary track.

I'm new to DVD Auth, and have not idea which software you're referring to with "Get VTS Sectors"... I haven't seen any menu selection in DVDShrink 3.0 beta - but I've had a impossible time getting this to play in my standalone. I've been fairly successful with some other burns, but for some reason, I can't get a good movie-only burn of Pirates, or The Hulk with DVDShrink. Once I pull out the extras, it just doesn't work (fine in PowerDVD on my PC though).
Wondering if it's this mysterious "Get VTS Sectors" ya'll referring to. Can someone explain?
Thanks,

So if I set up AutoShrinkISO to run DVDShrink & DVD Decrypter, I should be ok? I'll try it out. Thanks for the help 2COOL & mrbass!!

i just backed up my first dvd and it happens to be pirates of the caribbean.

i had english subs, all the audio tracks (normal, dts, + 2 commentaries), full menu with scene selection, and everything worked perfectly.

i'm so happy !

But I bet the picture quality looks like crap :)

Btw, what's the difference between using ImageTool/DVDDecrypter and NERO?

Isnt' NERO much faster without having to create an image first..

rudeboymcc
8th January 2004, 16:43
the picture quality is 80% the original, which is more than enough for me. plus i wanted the audio tracks and it wasn't possible to put them on another disk.

crap compared to what anyway?

luphy

ImgTool uses the Nero engine to burn using a quicker interface. It does not create an image prior to burning.

You have to have Nero ROM to use ImgTool - ImgTool is just an interface that makes choosing the files to burn, etc. faster. Give it a try....I like it.

How in the heck did you manage that? I dumped the DTS track (just english 5.1DD + commentaries), manually stripped out all the logos, trailers, ect and I ended up with 67% compression. I did the R1 release, did you do R2 perhaps?

And mine looked like crap compared to the original. The opening scene when the ship appears in the fog looked horrible. That's why I decided to scrap this project for now. Some recent comments in the Nemo method thread, in the Big3 forum, suggest the answer to my problem with the Big3 method. So perhaps soon I will give that method another go.

Must be movie only.

mrbass
9th January 2004, 07:50
I can get it to 82.9% with main movie only, 5.1 audio only and all 3 subs and slicing off the credits. With deep analysis I'd say it looks pretty slick.

rudeboymcc
9th January 2004, 18:16
region2. and that first fog seen is a clear indicator as to how good the quality is, and mine is sweet.

daehkcid
10th January 2004, 21:18
I actually got around 70% with credits and DD5.1 and all subs (movie only). MrBass, how in the hell cutting off the credits give u a bump to 82.5?

Unless my brain is damaged..

mine is region 1 maybe yours is a different region or whatever. Look at the screenshots in my guide and you'll see.

one thing i don't like is having things just played sequencially. i prefer choosing something from a menu for the price of a very little quality decrease (which i hardly notice).

but everyone likes it diferenty.

one thing i didn't manage to do is get rid of the bruce almighty advert. this comes before the menu, as soon as you put in the DVD. is there any way to get around it? it's not something you select in a menu.

all i did was reduce it to as low quality as possible (i think i chose the one which makes it into loads of pictures).

MrB, nice guide.. i think i have a bad memory and maybe it was 76% :) I'm R1 too.
