The news archives don't go back this far, but I think I remember when the 1st 4x pioneer drives came out, there was some warning about using 4x media with the 2X (A03-103) drive. Something about damaging the drive.

Is this true? What if I keep the speed at 2x?

I don't really know about that (my burner is 4x capable), but here's a quote from the label on a Verbatim DVD-R 4x 50pcs spindle (P/N 94495) I got:

This disc is capable of recording at 1-4x speed.
Due to a drive defect, permanent damage could occur to hardware and media if this disc is used with some older non-4x speed DVD-R recorders.
Please contact your hardware manufacturer regarding compatibility of your non-4x writer/ recorder with this high speed media.

UPDATE:
I just followed the link, and found this important info for Pioneer DVD-R/RW recorder owners: http://www.pioneer-eur.com/eur/support_update.jsp?category=support/update

The problem that drives could be destroyed has been fixed in firmware 1.90. You need firmware 2.00 to write 4x media at 2x.
