Liteon LDW-411s will not burn DVD-r media

Hi all,
I just got this drive today. I already have a sony 500AX that has worked real well. Got the liteon for second PC. I have tried to copy a 3.8 gig movie with the liteon and keep getting illegal media errors about 2/3 of the way through. I am using TDK 2X DVD-R and Memorex 4X DVD-r media. Both have burned great in the Sony, and older Pioneer A04. I have using dvd decryter (iso) and Nero 6 (all files) and have lost 5 disks tonight. I also tried burning to one of the DVD+rw that came with the drive. It was a 4x DVD+r w(no brand name on the DVD). That took over 2 hours to burn the same movie. I have seen in some other forums issue with the 411s and DVD-r media. Just checking her too. Also I have loaded the latest firmware update from lite-on.

Hmmm, i've got three of these drives, and have no problems with gsc and ritek dvd-r discs.

Do try fs07 firmware which is ment to be the best.

However i doubt it's a firmware issure since it starts burning. Could be a hardware setup issue, or a media issure (but even that is unlikely unless you ended up with those fake tdk discs).

Setup the burner by itself as master on the secondary IDE channel. Use an 80 wire cable. Make sure DMA is enabled. Try using different software for burning (my favorite is RecordNow).

I have seen errors such as you describe when the burner was connected to an onboard Promise controller -- you didn't make that mistake, did you?

I believe I have DMA enable. Don't have the 80 wire cable yet. No onborad Promise controller. Drive is set to master on second Ide controller, but I do have another slave CD-r drive on the machine. The part that drives me crazy is I has pioneer A04 working with no issues. I also can't figure out why it will burn to a certian point and then error with illegal media. I am purely guessing, but I think it is at the point when the burn is finishing. Will play with it more tonight.

I'm almost sure it's Memorex media. I just returned seven 4X DVD+R 25 packs to amazon. Although the Memorex DVD-R 4X seemed fine. Costco has 25 pack TDK 4X for $26.95 I believe. Try getting them there or at bestbuy.

Just to save you the head-ache. I had the same problem with the TDK 2X dvd-r media as well. Same exact issue. And both media burned fine on Sony 500AX and Pioneer A04 drives.

I have fixed the issue. I ended up replaceing the IDE cable with an Utlra IDE cable and the drive works like a champ. Have not had a bad burn yet and have used:
TDK 2x DVD-r
TDK 4X DVD+r
Memorex 4X DVD-4
Ritek 4X DVD-r

All burned and play fine in console DVD players. Hope this helps some of you.
