I've been wanting to check out Linux for some time now, and I have just installed Mandrake Linux 9.2 (as it is supposed to be the most user/newbie friendly version) onto my laptop; a Compaq Armada 7400.
My problem is my laptop's sound device was not recognised by the install program, and I have not got a clue as to where I go to set it up. The sound device is a ES1879 P+P Audiodrive (according to win2000). How do I install the drivers for it?

Thanks for any help - guide

Installing a driver under linux usually involves compiling and loading new kernel modules, it's somewhat involved but not that painful. You'll want to have a good look at some kernel intro docs, something like this (http://www.justlinux.com/nhf/Compiling_Kernels) would be an okay place to start.

Here (http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php3?company=ESS+Technology&card=ES18xx&chip=ES18xx&module=es18xx) is an installation instruction for ALSA (imho always a better choice than OSS).

Good Luck :)
