Trying my hand at the Big 3 with a DVD of mine. All of the assets are buried in VTS_01 as multiple PGCs, some sharing VOBIDs. It doesn't look overly complicated...the sharing comes from 1 or 2 play single / play all options on the DVD. I'm having some difficulty, though...

Here's the PGC structure for VTS_01:

PGC_1 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 1] [01:41:49.06 / 30 fps] (Programs: 29) (Cells: 29) (uses VOB-IDs: 17,18)

DIF4U, after analyzing, deselects PGCs 2, 10-12, 14-25. It states "PGCs with Duplicate VobIDs were unchecked and logged to the notes file. (Possible manual use of Scenarist required)".

That all seems well:
. PGC 2 dupes PGC 13, both using VobID 1
. PGCs 10-12 (VobIDs 8-10) are encapsulated in PGC 8 (Play all)
. PGCs 14-25 (VobIds 12-16,19-25) are encapsulated in PGC 26 (Play all)

It doesn't seem like this requires Demux'ing by VobID.

Ok, question: when processing DVDs like this, what's easier:
. rebuilding the PGCs that DIF4U deselected (and dummied)?
. or selecting the single play PGCs, deselecting the Play All PGCs instead, and rebuilding those instead?

Now, I went all the way through the Big 3 process on this DVD, and let Scenarist build a DVD (directory ...\0\VIDEO_TS\). Things got a little whacked here. I didn't do anything manually, as DIF4U initially hinted may be required, but I did that on purpose just to see what would result.

Here's the new Scenarist-built PGC structure for VTS_01:

Now, I know some things aren't quite right here, because some of these PGCs were dummied as a result of the process. But, as an example...

Looking at PGC8, why were 4 of the 5 chapters dummied? This PGC was initially selected, processed in full and the content is in the VOB (I checked). Is this normal?

Appreciate any insight into this - thanks...

hi JFerguson,
was a little bored at work :sly: so i got a chance to look over your posts, and was wondering if you got this sorted or not?
Ok, question: when processing DVDs like this, what's easier:
not much difference between the two to be perfectly honest...i am usually lazy, so i just go with what DIF4U selects, which, as far as i know, is always the 'play all' pgc.
as for:
This PGC was initially selected, processed in full and the content is in the VOB (I checked).
i am a little confused....are you saying that after you compiled your scenarist project and updated the ifos, when you tested the results, the part of the dvd used in pgc 8 played the same as the original?
seems a little bizarre....
particularly as that infomation doesnt seem to be referenced anywhere?

No, the post-processed IFO that I dumped above was just what Scenarist generated using the script that ReAuthorist generated. No manual tweaking at this point, no updating of IFOs, etc. I'm just surprised that PGC8 is as messed up as it is, given that it was entirely selected and run through everything (DIF4U, RA, BATCHCCEWS, etc.)

hmmmm....cant really say what happened there (particularly if you didnt get any error messages while importing the script in scenarist).
you could always try processing only pgc 8 again and copy the resultant files to your current working folder and either manually add them to the scenarist project or rename them exactly as the original (overwriting the original) and seeing if that fixes things.
sorry i couldnt be of further help.

As far as I know, ReAuthorist is not currently able to properly author PGCs with duplicate VOBIDs. It's going to require manual reauthoring (or sometimes it can be done using ifoupdate's ACM mode) which is why I had my app warn you. The warning shouldn't have been ignored ;)

jel
5th December 2003, 02:04
very true as always Eyes`Only....never ignore warnings!
however, i think the question posed was, even with manual reauthoring of the ReAuthorist generated Scenarist project, how would you reauthor ( for example pgc 10) as the information for that pgc *should* be in pgc 8, however, it appears to be 'dummied'?

Eyes`Only
5th December 2003, 02:09
What I can't figure out is how you can look at that IFO and tell whether something was dummied or not. I don't know how, and I consider myself fairly adept with em!

If they were dummied, i really couldnt tell you why. But I wouldn't think they would be. PGC 8 is 11 minutes long, it shouldn't have been dummied at all.

thats probably part of my problem Eyes`Only, am i not yet 'adept' but am still in the 'inept' stage which is why i am so interested in learning more :D
well, let me explain...
from a newbies point of view, if i was doing this project, when manually creating say pgc10, i would delete the dummy track that was created and drag and drop the appropriate chapter/track information from pgc 8...in the original case this is CH02 from pgc 8.
yet looking at the ifo that was created with no manual reauthoring, CH02 in pgc 8 only contains 15 frames whereas the original was around 2496.
hence, my confusion, and 'assumption' that it had been 'dummied'

Eyes`Only

Oh! OK! I see where you are coming from.

Yes, it looks like PGC 8 is made of a bunch of dummies then. However, this could be because it is made up of what was created for pgc 10 (a dummy), etc.

If you go into the tracks, can you find a PGC8 track, and in that, can you find the data you are looking for? RA is really weird when it comes to a non-standard demux. The video might really be there for you. If it's not, it's time to learn to manually author the VTS from the start. It's really not hard though, the only new app you'll need to learn is scenchap. See Doom9's guides for more info.

*light dawns on yonder granite!*
thanks for the clarification, although it hasnt happened to any projects i have worked on ......yet, its good to know what to look out for :)
