View Full Version : Probs with decoding-speed

I use GK 0.28.6.2 and have some Probs with the decoding speed. I have a Pentium 4 M Processor with 2,8 GHz (a Notebook-Processor) and GK decode only with 12 fps. With my old Computer was faster in decoding and this was only a 1,3 GHz Processor.
Have GK maybe problems with Mobile Processor? The mobile Prozessor work with 1,4 GHz when I use the notebook with battery, but I decode not in battery-Mode.
Can someone help me, because I nedd 6 hours for one film - my friend have with the P4 2,8GHz 20-30 fps.
(sorry, my english isn't the best)

Hi angelus80 and Welcome to Doom9 forums
The knowledge on mobile and desktop PC processing is verylimited. But I could say the encoding methods were different then encoding speed also differs. Therefore specify the encodign setting used in both cases.
If mobile CPU lacks enhanced CPU instructions like SSE2 etc, then that can be your problem. To know which CPU instructions are supported, use virtualdub. Go to video compression -> XviD(Assuming XviD 1.0 beta) -> Advanced options -> Debug tab. Here you can see force optimization, where some CPU instructions are ticked and greyed. The ticked ones are supported by your CPU.
BTW, decoding is opposite of encoding. Former is used for playing back and latter is used for creating.:)

Perhaps something to mention is that if you're using the new Divx 5.1 in Gknot then the "standard" encoding speed of 5.1 is equal to the slowest speed of 5.0.5. So if you're using the new divx on your notebook, then that may be the case. Also the Pentium 4-M notebook processors are different from the desktop versions in it that they actively manage power consumption (ie. the processing speed). Intel says it can do this even between key strokes, which may be the case. However this seems to only really take effect when the laptop is being used little or not at all, and encoding sure wouldn't be that (granted you meant encoding in your post).
