NanDub Tips

I'm trying get that little extra inch from my nandub divx encodes. Was wondering if any of you nandub users out there, have any personal preference for top quality settings.

Not trying to find the "best" (breaks rule 12) but am looking to try some different options to play with to find what works for me.

There is indeed no 'specifical' and named thread...

But you can find search this forum (with the feature)
with keyword nandub and find a lot of post you might want to read...

(eg threads talking of quality, of macro block problem etc.)

esby: you have a lot of wonderful posts out there. I have my DRF and Keyframe settings in check. In one of your posts you mentioned playing with the antishit settings.. was wondering what you'd recommend. I've read that you don't want to use too much of these settings. You seem very knowledgeable on this stuff, was just wondering what you'd personally recommend.

Well about antishit,
here my thought:
on nandub rc2 version:
It works well in 80-95% of the case
but it produces drf16 or drf32 frames sometime,
which are to avoid...
and it does not work on the 10-15% of the cases too...
So you'll have to check the video for error and splice (reencode partially) to get rid of the problem...
Which is kinda harassing...

With my version of nandub you won't have this kind of trouble,
but you can have some others troubles (like gradiant of red/green)
appearing sometimes with the suggested default settings,
due to the picture going slightly worse & worse after each frames encoded,
and falling to the green or red color in some parts,
meaning the errors accumulate until it become really visible...
(workaround solution, putting the DFnoise parameter to 25-50 instead of 100+)


for my personnal preference,
I can only talk for anime...
(the only non anime material i have encoded was the lotr first trailer (reencoded in this case) that was in 'mov')
I think most animes will be fine with @700-950kbits settings
usually meaning 175mb for a 25 min eps...

My personnal approach is to try to find a profile for a serie
and try keeping it while encoding the episode...
(fansub context, one episode to 'do' each week)
Meaning lot of work when the serie start,
finding the proper filtering (or what i think to be the proper one),
since there are several ways to do it, and since what i can see
is not what another person could see...
And then adjusting the settings to each raw you can encounter,
some being worses than others...

I think that can be easily applied to dvd backupping or any legal encoding workaround(including interoperability purpose),
but in fact there is no 'true profile',
the only way to go is tweaking the profile and allowing more bitrate
when you can.
And sometimes you'll find the codec limitation...
