View Full Version : Found another fake VIDEO_TS.VOB

I was trying to back up "The Truth About Charlie" R1......

The VIDEO_TS.VOB file is 489 mb's. After previewing the video in that file, it apears that the trailer for the movie is in there something like 7 times, one after another. I thought maybe they did one for each language setting or something.

I tried using NuMenu4U (final version), but didn't get the proper results. I then started trying a bunch of different stuff. I used NuMenu4U R4 to redo the menu, and it stripped out the trailer portion of the video altogether, leaving just the warning screens and such (all of them are stills). This resulted in a vob size of just 1.5 mb's. Then I thought I'd try merging my own reworked trailer video(just 1 instance of it, instead of 7) onto the end of it.

When testing out the end result using power dvd, I found that when I selected to play the trailer, nothing at all would happen. It was as if there was nothing there at all.

Becoming suspicious, I began to check all the movie vob sets on the disk to see what they were. Remember I was just working with the VIDEO_TS.VOB file and ifo & bup files only, that NuMenu4u spit out.

To my amazement, VTS set 3 contained....yup you guessed it......the trailer!! After copying over VTS_03_1.VOB into the folder with the ifo files, and the 1.5mb VIDEO_TS.VOB file, I loaded the movie back up into power dvd once more. This time, when I selected to play the trailer, it began playing right away!!

So, to make an already long story short..... Universal video created a dummy VIDEO_TS.VOB file, but they did it in a really sinister way. They filled the file with 7 or 8 iterations of the trailer. To the casual observer, it appears that all of the video is necessary when in reality it isn't. I ended up just leaving the 1.5 mb VIDEO_TS.VOB file that NuMenu4u created as it was.

I like the end result though, because if you have been paying attention this far, you'll see that my 489 mb VIDEO_TS.VOB file is now only 1.5 mb's!!

So, hopefully this thread can help someone else out, and save them some time (and space!)

I think what you're saying is that NuMenu4u worked and correctly diagnosed a fake VOB and replaced these with dummies? Is this right?

To be honest, I'm not sure what I'm saying. It's possible that NuMenu did exactly what you say it did (exactly what it was supposed to do), although I wasn't aware R4 could detect and delete dummy files in the vob (please correct me if I am wrong). R4 is the version I used that created the 1.5 mb file.

Upon reflection, if I had used R4, and without giving it a second thought, went straight into DoItFast4You immediately afterwards, then I would definitely have arrived at the correct result. So it appears that R4 did do exactly what it is supposed to do

The final version didn't seem to work right for me. It re-encoded the video files and such, but in the end it just copied the original 489 mb VIDEO_TS.VOB file into the VIDEO_TS directory. When I used the final version, I set it to do the english language pack only, and I seem to recall there was an error thrown up from menu stripper that said the command line arguments were incorrect. ((( I do have the "AutoDetect Dummy/Fake Vobs and Replace" option enabled )))

Upon trying the second time with R4, I clicked the "all" language pack instead of just "eng"

If you like, I can try it again using the final version, and clicking the "all" box for the language to see what results I have. If that doesn't work, I can always zip up the ifo & bup files along with the menu vobs for you to test yourself to see first hand what's going on.

Ps, Cool program by the way. NuMenu4U is a brilliant idea and progam!

i would like you to test latest final 1.0.2 to see what that throws up.

Ok, will do.

I'll test it right away to see if I get the menu stripper error again...but doing a full test run will have to wait for a couple hours...I'm about an hour into re-encoding the main movie, so gotta wait till that's done :)

Ok, I downloaded the newest version from your site, installed, started up, and checked the "english" language box, and got the same menu stripper error.

I'll do a full run with the "all" language box checked later on and see what turns out.

No problem....pm me your email address and I'll send both log files.

I tried again last night using the "all" language selection without any luck. I noticed that the trailer in the VIDEO_TS.VOB is video only . No audio at all. Not sure if that counts for anything or not
