View Full Version : Old movies with Divx 5.1.1

Hello,
I would like to encode a quite old movie, Bruce Lee's Way of the Dragon.
I'd like to ask what filters could help improve the quality of the film.
Should I use the Gordian Knot's Noise Filters? If yes, what setting would be better (little, medium, heavy) for this kind of films?
I have also noticed that in the Divx encoder settings there is an option for pre-processing. Do those have the same effect as the ones from GK?
Can they be used together? Are they better?
Thanks in advance :-)

Hi grmoz and welcome to Doom9 forum,
Regardign your question, you can open avis directly using GK and preview how the noise filters work. Actually the noise filters are the avisynth filters. So it will be better searching avisynth forum with keyword 'noise'. These filters apply noise reduction at time of encoding, that is its a pre-playback thing. Same as this divx encoders preprocessing also reduces noise.( Infact makes video over smooth than with avisynth noise filters) So obviously you can use both. (But video will be highly smooth ) Should I use the Gordian Knot's Noise Filters? If yes, what setting would be better (little, medium, heavy) for this kind of films?
This depends on how much noise is present in source. You have to preview the avs in any mediaplayer to conclude which is better. There is one excellent filter for noise removal called Convolution3D. It is installed along with GK and you can read documentation about it in GK's Docs folder.
Good Luck.

I agree temporance, but its difficult to determine (in divx) what level of to be applied as it's done on encoding time and we need to wait untill the encoding is complete. In case of avisynth, the preview is instant and we can conclude what is to be used in no time. Hope you got what is in my mind:) .
