Before DoCCE came along, I used 3 pass on CCE. Now I have tried Roba on main and extras. Should the quality be better with this method? Looking closely, 3 pass noral method seems to give better results than 3 pass Roba. Any thoughts?

for what it's worth: I like multipass over roba.

Could you elaborate on the method you used to measure the quality of the encoded movie? Is there a tool to determine the quality against some benchmark? Or do you just take a screen snapshot, enlarge it and look at the pixels to get some general feeling?

I'm interested about your technique. If we can objectively conclude that the manual 3-pass CCE yields better quality than RoBa then I'll be happy to use the multipass method. It saves lots of time. Currently, in DoCCE4U, if we specify 3 passes, it'll actually do 4 passes. On my machine, each pass takes between 2.5 to 4.5 hours. If the manual 3-pass yields comparable or better quality, then I could save hours right there.

Thanks.

I did a encode with the roba method i could'nt see a difference between that and the standard vbr, but the roba one did come out alittle too big if i remember correct, so i just use the multipass, ive always use it now, even when i did svcds i only used the standard vbr.
The roba did seem to take a little longer creating the vaf if i also remember correct.

I think it comes down to your own preference

The multipass 3 pass does 4 passes too :)

To view technical quality difference, I use bitrate viewer (trial version only), which show the Q level. The lower the Q, the better the video from a technical perspective. From a realistic perspective, if you can't tell the difference yourself, does it matter if the Q level is slightly different? ;)

Is 3 passes enough? I'm using RoBa 7 pass with an avg bitrate of 3.5mbps (which seems like overkill, but I just wanted to be sure I got the maximum quality out of it..)

But if its just a waste of time, I guess i'll bump it back down to 3 passes...

I personally do 5 pass for main-movie, 4 passes for extras. It's a matter of self-preference though. Don't believe the hype about 3 passes being the threshold where you won't see difference. I can see noticeable difference between 3 and 5 passes. After 5, I really can't see the difference, but that's probably because at 5 it looks DAMN GOOD! hehe

My observation is also not based on scientific evidence ;) I just think the quality is somewhat better with Roba.
