Suddenly I get the following message no matter what movie I am trying to encode with Virtual dub, Flask and Xmpeg "cannot start video compression: source image format is not acceptable (error code -2)". I changed the 5.1.1 I was using with 5.0.5 but nothing. I had recently changed my CPU with a new one just before the problem started (new CPU AMD 2600+).

Usually this happens when the image dimensions (width/height) are not divisible by 4 (or better still by 16).

I don't know if this will help but here's a portion of the FAQ in Gordian Knot:

If VdubMod fails to encode the first pass with "videosourceavi error: the sourceimage format is not acceptable. (error code -2)" you may have to make a manual change in your Windows registry. See TelemachusMH's comment in http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51906.

I was running into the same error message while trying to compress certain types of MPEG 1 and 2 files recorded off of TV. It took a while but I found that trying to use the codec's built-in crop function was creating the error message 'Source image not acceptable' error code -2, switching to a virtualdub filter for cropping fixed the problem.
