Hi
I made a backup of my dvd. I did it only with DTS sound, and now I dont get any sound. I'm playing DVDs with WinDVD and Hollywood Plus, Hollywood plus options has somekind of DTS settings but do I need somekind of surround receiver to output the sound to my TV or should I get the sound from H+ directly to my TV? If I need an DTS surround receiver, isnt there any way around it?

...use ac3 next time...or downsample dts to stereo for example. i think you can use besweet to downsample dts streams

Check the audio options of WinDVD, WinDVD can play DTS without a DTS decoder (unless you're running a particularly old version) so it should be ok. I used to use it for DTS playback but now run my pc through a 5.1 setup.

I have a related question, partly due to my early position on the audio learning curve. In creating back-up dvd's I have traditionally stripped out all but one sound track, keeping either the 2 channel or the 6 channel Dolby in English. I've recently acquired a home theater rig that can play DTS, and it's a major hit. I'm now including the DTS track in my backups. I've also been including the "standard" 6 channel audio. Space is often at a premium, though, and I wonder if that's necessary, and what would happen if I left it out. My current arrangement can play DTS, obviously, but I wonder how such a disc (DTS ONLY) would work in another system that either didn't have such a player or didn't have a digital-capable sound system. I sometimes take the discs on the road, also, and play them on my laptop, usually with PowerDVD; I don't know if this would be a problem either.

If you try to play a dts disk on a non-dts-capable system you will get white noise. Period. And it can/will blow your speakers if the sound is turned up. On a DVD, either a DD stream or a two-channel stream for the sound to be heard on a non-dts system.

you mostly get a 'dangerous' white noise on wrong setup/less features with DTS Audio CDs (PCM) cause the signal would be interpreted as normal Audio CD (only the right amp. brings the ability to decode),
else I remarked that you would here nothing with DTS selected - this depends on your DVD Player/Amp wiring, if you use the DVD encoder (connected with 6 single chich cable) or use the amp decoder (via one chinch/light wire).
Me I always combine one AC3 Track plus DTS - with less space you can always split or shrink the Movie Track. Some DTS uses 1536kbit/s (that means really much space ~1GB), if you convert the sound to 768kbit/s means half. This sound is still an improvement compaired to the AC3 Track

That is a matter of opinion. ;)
I do not want to start another Dolby Digital vs. DTS discussion/argument/fervorous war, as there are enough of those out there already. It suffices to say that if you like the DTS track/mix, by all means put it on your discs. But don't blanketly state that DTS is superior to DD, because that is for each individual listener to decide for themselves.
As far as the actual question here, a DTS-only disc is definitely possible to create, and will be playable on most modern players. It is, however, not in accordance with the specification for DVDs. The spec states that a DVD must contain a PCM or AC3 track at minimum, and then may have other audio included as extras. There are some older players that will balk if the disc doesn't contain at least one PCM or AC3 track.
