View Full Version : Create surround from stereo audio

I have read through the guides and other threads and am more confused than when I started.
I do VHS to DVD conversion of older material for bands and such. I capture through a Canopus ADVC100. Once the video is processed, I extract the audio and clean it up as best I can with Cool Edit, then encode to AC3 with BeSweet. Most of the tapes that I convert always have surround sound (ie all 5 speakers). However, I have a performance that is in stereo, but only through the center and front left and right speakers. Exactly what do I need to do to get 5 channel sound?
I have looked at the Guide to Stereo to 5 Channel and created a wav file with 6 mono wavs, then seperated into 6 wavs. But I'm not sure what I need to do next. It would seem as the guide is used for creating audio cd's or DTS tracks. I want to convert back to AC3.
I have also looked at the thread about feeding BeSweet all 6 mono files via a mux list, but it was confusing too and I am not sure if it will produce a surround file either.
Can someone point me in the right direction...

Ensure the audio is 48,000 hz with a ac3 header. What software are you using to capture? I just purchased the canopus advc100 is why I ask.

The audio from the captured .avi file from the Canopus is a 48000hz wav file. When the audio is extracted and loaded into a wav editor, it shows up as 2 channel stereo.
When I encode other projects with BeSweet, I always choose 448 AC3 and 5.1 as my AC3 encoding options. However, this file does not have any rear channel output. I am wondering if there is any way to simulate or get some type of audio output through the rear channels.
BTW, I use Premiere to capture with. I have tried others like WinDV and Scenalyzer Live, but like Premiere the best. I then load the file in VirtualDub to trim the video and apply filters, and do my final MPEG2 encoding with Canopus Procoder.

Thank you for the help.
I am getting very close to my goal. I ended up following the GUIDE: Stereo to 5-Channel Surround. My problem is the rear output was too low. So I increased the db of the SR and SL wav by about 10db in CoolEdit to get my desired results. However, for the life of me, I can not get BeSweet to merge the 6 mono files 448 5.1 AC3
here is my list.mux:
D:\FL.wav
D:\C.wav
D:\FR.wav
D:\SL.wav
D:\SR.wav
D:\LFE.wav
this is my BeSweet Log:

The output AC3 shows up as Dolby 3.0 in DVDLab. In past attempts to get the right level on the rear channels, BeSweet output was Dolby 5.1 in DVDLab. I authored the disc to DVD-RW and the sound was once again only through the front and center channels. The previous attempts when the level was too low the output in DVDLab was Dolby 5.1.
Am I using the wrong switch?
If I try and use the GUI to combine the 6 mono wavs to 5.1 448 AC3 using the following:

I end up with a Dolby 448 5.1 AC3 file, but it is 2x the original files length in time (plays way too fast)....
I am frustrated and hopelessly confused
