View Full Version : Subtitles and Audio Sync in MAC

hi.
i'm using mac's DVD Studio Pro to author movies after i have converted them to MPEG 2 video only with the audio seperate as AC3 5.1....no problem there - but there are a few snags i'd like answers to from all of you experts here :) :

1. how can I get the subtitles - the one's that work on the .avi's I convert and watch on BsPlayer - to be imported to the authoring prog ...so far i've managed only by converting them to .stl files with subtitle workshop but i came out as jiberish.

2. My audio is getting a bit off sync and i think it's because when i convert to .m2v it changes the frame rate from 23.976 to 29.97. i've tried messing around with TMPG's DVD NTSC template and managed to create a template with 23.976 but when i tired to import it to DVD Studio Pro it says it's not compatible (As did DVD Maestro AND Tmpg DVD Author !)..... how can i fix that ? i mean, Isn't it logical that I would be able to Burn to DVD in 23.976 like commercial DVD's ????

So : what i ask of you is this : either i can import 23.976 .m2v or fix the audio sync to match the change...anyway - how do i do that?
i'd like an answer for the subtitle thing too.
thanx a lot to anybody who tries to answer me ! :))

P.S.

yes - i have both a mac and a pc - DVD Studio Pro is much better that all the other proggs.

Isn't there anybody with enough speciality and knowledge to help me ??!!:(

If you convert the video to a framerate, then make sure the audio was the same. So convert the audio to whatever framerate you gave the video, isn't that a simple solution.

first of all thanks :)
second, it sounds easy enough but how do i take an ac3 file and just convert it's framerate without messing it up and without extracting/reencoding it ?

How was the Ac3 created? It's hard to believe an AVI contained it. If that is the case, what did you use to extract it?

i just used virtual dub->Direct Stream Copy->Save Wav->All Files->***.ac3 - very simple.
the avi is with 5.1 ac3 - not that uncommon.

To be able to import it into an authoring prg. you have to perform a pulldown to your video. It's still gonna be at 23.976 fps.

so if i do a pull down the end result would be 29.97, right ?
'cause i tried pulling it down with TMPG and it says "23.976(internally 29.97)". and my authoring still didn't accept it.

btw...I'm using DVD Studio Pro on macintosh...but i tried TMPG DVD Author too - same result.

After you encode your video, you'll end up with a mpv file. Then use pulldown (you can find it on doom9 download section).
There's a gui version, very easy to use, it's called DoPulldown. It just sets some flags witch tells the player to play it at 29.97.
This way the authoring program will accept it.
I belive it's the same thing, whether you're doing it on a mac or windows.

ummm i get a .m2v MPEG2 file, i don't know what a mpv is .
i'm using TMPG for the conversion and if it put 3:2 pull down as a filter for the encoding it produces odd artifacts - like lines or something whenever there's a fast motion - if i use a different prog for that, it'll do a better job ?
i thought TMPG was supposedly the best...

p.s.

thanx for your help but maybe you could and explain to someone who's a bit stupid :)

ummm by mpv did you mean a file with the video and audio muxed together ?
well, in TMPG where I encode the video i use VIDEO ONLY mode so i get a .m2v file.

It doesn't matter it's m2v. You can still do pulldown. But for that you have to use the command line pulldown.
To be able to use the other one, just rename the file to mpv.
And yes, I'm talking video only.

OK i've figured it out - finally !
it was the size of the picture the wasn't right - after i have fixed it to 720X480 i went and encoded it with 3:2 pull down when playback and i got excellent results...
as for subtitles - i'm using DVD SP 2.0.2 - Auenf : i hope you can help man...

one other thing though - i've recnetly tried to author a PAL movie - using the Build function to save it to the HD instead of burning it directly and then checked it with Apple DVD Player to see if everything was fine, and it was, BUT...when i burned it and watched it with my set top player the audio was a bit out of sync - slightly late..don't have a clue as to what the problem is.

treat DVD SP 2.x as DVDMaestro, including the subtitle and chapter file formats.

(subrip will convert between formats for you easily iirc)
