Is it encoded as 6 mono/separated channels (6x1) or 3 joint-stereo ones? (3x2)
I have found many discussions about channel coupling, but concerning 6-ch mode I have not been able to find anything specific, whatever if it's used (even badly) or not at all (like 6 mono tracks).

AFAIK there is no channel coupling used in 5.1 Vorbis, but I couldn't find a definitive answer in a few searches. Your best bet for low bitrate 5.1 sound is probably AAC, good directshow filter, lots of encoding options, and industry support, look for it to be the audio codec of the future.

I would like to know too, because when I tried it a while ago, the rear right channel came out really bad as if it was coupled to the LFE channel... Then again I didn't play around with it much and could be wrong...

Because of current Besweet bug or limitation, I remember to not use one of the 3 switches "-ota", "-ssrc" (or "-shibatch") or "-boost" jointly with ogg 6ch mode.
here is my full working setup:
BeSweet -core( -input "must_specify_full_path\in.ac3" -output "must_specify_full_path\out.ogg" -logfilea "BeSweet.log" ) -azid( -c light --maximize ) -ogg( -q 0 -6ch )
- do not use azid switch "-L -3db" because have no sense with 5.1 transcoding
- using "-q -0.03" can give bitrate like 5.1 AAC-HE with Nero streaming/VBR (50~70Kb/s)
- as alternative to "-ota ( -d xxx )" parameter you could use AC3 Delay Corrector first
I strongly advise to use matrix_mixer filter to monitor 5.1 outputs (do not use AC3Filter, at least latest ver. has some channel mapping bug...), leave open its config. window, first play few seconds of your AC3 file, then try your 5.1 encoded file.
Look and check at the matrix_mixer window if mapping is correct, there are six peak meter bars.
With this method you could be able to verify your encoded file mapping even without 5.1 equipment. :)
P.S.: Maybe is Vorbis 1.0.1 improvement, but Ogg 6ch at -q 0 sounds me clearly better than AAC-HE (streaming), vorbis doesn't seem to suffer from some heavy ATH masking that AAC seems to apply (due to critical bitrate), background sounds and quiet details can be easely listened while AAC filters with some hard cut off (easily noticeable).
