Playback problems in PS2

Hi all.
I have encoded some movies with gordian knot and using the guides here on doom9.org to xvid, but out of 5 movies yet, 2 of them doesnt play back as it should, i play them in my ps2 with reality media player, and the picture and sound freezes up in a half second and then continues. Like a bad frame in a vcd, this happens sometimes in the movie, but too much to accept the error.
I have checked for bad frames but none of my programs vill find any.
So what might i be doing wrong, i mean 3 of the movies plays exellent.
Please help me outhere.

Perhaps the PS2 can't afford the decoding in real time (the resolution/bitrate is too high).
I've no experience on PS2, but this could be a cause.

Do you have the latest version PS2Reality Mediaplayer 1.50?

PS2Reality Media Player has big problems with bitrates above about 1000 kbps, especially if the resoultion is larger than 512x384. 640x480 encodes rarely play smoothly.

Until someone makes an optimized player, you should consider doing encodes at 480x360 at no more than 1000 kbps. Also, for VBR encodes, keep the max bitrate down.

I wasn't aware of the fact that a ps2 can play back xvid files.
Does the ps2 need to be modified or does it support it out of the box?

It doesn't support it out of the box. Some programmers in Spain made an AVI player for the PS2 which uses FFMPEG to decode the video. It handles MP3, OGG, or AC3 audio. It also does subtitle files. It's pretty limited in that it only plays AVI files, plus it's not terribly optimized. Given the limitations, it does a pretty good job of playing AVIs on the PS2.

I'm working on a more optimized player for the PS2 which will also handle other formats like OGM and MKV.

ummmm Joe...PLEASE keep us informed of your progress. I know that i'm more than interested in this kind of thing. It'd be nice to have playback of mkv files burned in mode 2 onto a cd ;)

I will. I'm doing some experimenting with the CDVD at the moment to figure out once and for all if and how VCDs should be handled. I'd really love to watch my VCD/SVCDs on my PS2. It has plenty of power for that.

PS2 Media Player is not the best player but I'm not aware of any other player that can do better or even the same things like that piece of "wonder". Consider how old the PS2 is! But I hope u will push PS2 DivX development to another 'wonderous' step!

Last time I tried, PS2 Reality Media Player play XviD and DivX file very choppy (1CD rip movie ~800kbps) and mp3 audio is muff (PS2R even have high and low quality mode for mp3)

In conclusion, PS2R can't compare with XBOX Media Player/Center in any aspect.

naha. not the time, the money or the inclination (although it's unquestionably a faster machine)

probably better that an optimized media player be made for it, which is what's being done.

You guys should try out the Qcast media player, now called the Gameshark Media PLayer. I haven't used it for a while so I don't know how well it works now, but it streams fiels off you hdd to your PS2 over a lan. Works well for low bitrate stuff, but then again, they update it all the time and i haven't used it for a while. It works on unmodded PS2's altho it costs$$.

The problem with QCast/GSMP is that it doesn't play disks. You have to stream everything from a PC over ethernet. That means you have to unplug your PS2 from the network router and into a hub going to the PC. Ditto for the PC unless you use the USB for hooking to the net. This also means your PS2 HAS to be near the PC... unless you don't mind running those bulky TBase10 cables all around the house.

Sorry, but it has to play disks as well or it's not worth pirating much less buying.

But, I do read that it plays videos better than PS2RMP, so we know that playing videos can be done better. The PS2RMP people would have you believe that you can't do better than they already are.
