I was curious if anyone could give me any insight into recording the audio via my satellite receiver. I hooked it up to my sound card etc but it seems to be too much for it to handle?! is there any way to record audio from satellite in good quality?
*I didn't know where to post this as this website isn't generally geared for this but if you know of a website let me know*
thanks.
sorry I just found the right place to ask this, if moderator could delete this that'd be awesome, I tried but not allowed :(

I don't know what you exactly mean by: but it seems to be too much for it to handle?! Is it that the sound is very amplified and gets clipped. Or is it that you have no sound. If the sound is very amplified and thus distorted you have to lower the line input volume meter or the microphone level meter. It's just the port inwhich you have the cable stucked in. You can do this by first opening the Windows audio setup. Here you can set all the volume levels of the appropriate devices. Like for example the microphone. Make sure you select the record properties. Otherwhise you will end up adjusting the playback properties of your PC and thus won't get any results containing the recorded sound from your satellite.
For your information.

lol now that I think of it your right, I feel dumb for such a stupid post because I didn't even have to read the rest of your post to know what you were going to say I just didn't put it that way and therefore ran out of troubleshooting ideas but you are exactly right. I have tried it yet but I'm sure it will work as Ihave all my volume levels just blasted. Thanks for the quick reply.
I thought the quality of satellite A/V would be better than it is. I mean the video is obviously good but the audio is terrible. I've kinda fixed the overamplification a bit but it just seems like it's been recorded from a Live album or something.

A better way is to buy a DVB card and directly record the original MP2 stream.
No D/A A/D conversions and no recompression. Unfortunately many bad channels just broadcast @ 128 kbs that is not a very good quality IMHO.

Dionysus, Here's how I do it:
1. Satellite receiver SPDIF toslink >> Audigy Platinum
2. KX (EMU 10Kx) drivers "direct recording mode" (www.kxproject.com)
3. Capture 48KHz audio and video w/ Virtualdub
4. Demux video and audio streams w/ VirtualdubMod
5. "Fix" the AC3 wav file >> .ac3 file with BeSplit.
6. Process/recompress Video to suit personal taste.
7. Remux video w/ .ac3 file. (I like mkvmergegui for the final.)
This should work with PCM stereo streams from my receiver too (it doesn't do mp2 at all) but, if I only want stereo, I never go through this trouble because my ReplayTV is so much simpler. However, for 5.1 sound, you need something like the KX drivers or a "professional" soundcard that ignores the SCMS in the satellite AC3 stream, or a hardware SCMS stripper. I know you weren't asking about ac3 specifically, but you WERE asking about better sound recording from a satellite receiver. This should do the trick for you.
