I am not interested in making xvid files but run into them occasionally when downloading TV shows from the Internet. I installed the above DShow filter and while the shows play, they are really dark. Under XP Pro I have WMP and BSPlayer as well as importing the files into Premiere Pro. The only way up to now to see the shows properly was to use VLC (www.videolan.org) or use Virtualdub to re-encode the files into a different form. Reading the faq in this forum I noticed that another recommended filter to use was Milan's FFDSHOW filter. I have tried that now it seems that the files play okay

Since I presume Nic's filter is just a binary of the XVID source, I wonder why a potentially incompatible filter works?

Just wondering

It's a great possibility that what you have now is actually just a plain dshow filter from XviD's CVS. You can find the latest Nic's dshow filter here (http://nic.dnsalias.com/XviD-Dec.exe). And it has a brightness slider in it's properties dialog so a dark picture shouldn't be a problem.
