Any program i can use to remotely control my PC?

Well, christmas is coming and i'll be out of town for 2 weeks, and if like me, you use to have daily taskings on your personal computer at home, you want to be able to have access to your computer even if your not home.

Is there any freeware program that you guys could suggest me? Or maybe a shareware i could try for like a month?

And i guess i'll have to install the software on the computer i'll use to access mine at home right?

there are tons of "backdoor" software (like back orifice et all) that indicate this use as their raison d'être :)

and i imagine with a decent internet connection you could get quite usable screen view nowadays.

I dunno, but even windows built in "remote desktop administation" could do - however this might be even more unsafe than "scene" software, as there are sure tons of people trying to hack this latest M$ joke.

google for virtual network computing, that might do the trick for you.

I often use RealVNC (http://www.realvnc.com/) or TightVNC (http://www.tightvnc.com/). Both work quite well, are open source, and will work from almost anywhere you can get a browser window open.

@Pamel: Salut! the only thing with these open-source program is that we have to install a viewer.. hum. not too sure my host will appreciate i install software on their computer ;) but tightvnc use a simple exe (no installation needed) so this might be an option for long-term using (not like the shareware unless i buy it).

I like the idea of browser-based program, that's sooo cool!

Have you guys tryed these programs? cause im wondering if they crash or what... 'cause not usefull if they crash and im 4000km from home! I need stability for at least 2 weeks. :p

[EDIT] Ooops, i just thought about my firewall... will it pop-up and stop my communication? hehehe

If by install a program, I assume you are talking about the computer you are trying to access, and yes you would need to install it on the computer you are trying to access. But that is true of any program with the exception of the Windows 2K/XP remote desktop functionality built in.

For VNC, I install the service on my home computer, and then whenever I want to access my home computer from somewhere I open up the web browser and type in, "http://IPAddress:Port" where IPAddress is the IP address of my home computer and Port is the port number VNC is set to run off of. (The default is port 5800) No software needs to be installed in the computer you are using because it automatically runs a Java applet to view the home desktop.

There is an .exe that you can run that works a little faster, but it doesn't need to be installed. You could just host the exe (<250KB) on a web server somewhere and download it anytime you want to use it.

As far a firewalls go, you just need to make sure that the port that you are using is open and that the VNC service can access the internet. If you are using a router, forward the ports you are using to the machine running the service.

VNC has a built-in miniwebserver that runs a java applet which is also a client.

then there's webex but I'm not aware of a free trial by those guys

In both cases I think there may be a higher level of security if you are concerned about that at all.

I have installed RealVNC as a service under WinXP and it just works like a charm! WOUHOU! :p

As long as i configure my firewall correctly to receive connections, im good.

You can't beat VNC. It runs everywhere on every system and it does an excelent job.

Yep! it is very powerfull! I also made a subdomain to my domain to re-direct to my computer! :D All i need to do: enter the password and i can monitor my downloads from my job! hehehee...

There's only couple of things i did'nt try yet:

1-can i access my PC if it is locked?
2-can i reboot my machine remotely and re-access the PC?
3-there's a Ctrl-Alt-Del function that may lock the PC under Win2000... how to under WinXP (usually Alt-option/L)

I might try them one day but if you guys already know that, i may skip some frustrating issues while im off home :p
