Does Xvid require a Pentium 2?

When installing the Kazaa Lite full codec pack, I get an error:

C:\WINDOWS\STSREM\xvid.ax
Unable to register the DLL/OCX: External exception C000001D.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but there is one thing I need to know. Does the Xvid codec use 686 instructions, of the kind that are available on a Pentium 2 but absent on a K6-x?

Xvid can be used on a K6, at least a K6-3DII (but i doubt the "3D" makes a diffrence). But of course these CPUs are rather slow so fluent playback of a hi-resolution encode might be a task in itself :)

yeah its definatley the evil kazaa lite codec pack... get the gordian knot codec pack from doom9's download site. that has everything you need, and nothing you dont.

I have the same problem but with koepi's builds.
Version 04102002-1 worked for me but all the next builds don't. There is always an error registering and unregistering xvid.ax. As a result I can watch xvid videos but without DirectShow filter.
I have windows 2000 and an amd k6-II.

Maybe it's just the part of the installation-routines which register xvid.ax?
Stupid question: Did you try to uninstall xvid prior to upgrading?

Xvid's decoder probably won't work well on a K6-2. On mine I needed to use ffdshow with all filtering/etc turned off to get acceptable playback.

Yours may be faster then my old 400 though.

If you want smooth and proper xvid playback on a sub 500mhz processor, the best solution is to use movix (movix.sourceforge.net), a movie-playback operating system. Just burn it to a CD, restart your computer with the CD in the drive and open the file

Alternatively you can use a pendrive or a whole load of floppy disks to start it, or install it as a seperate OS on your hard disk.

I too had this problem. I reported it a while back but it went ignored. The old system was a k6-2 400. Problems with registering xvid.ax

Just an idea but have the people with problems registering the xvid.ax tried doing it manually?

regsvr32 xvid.ax
is the command for windows2k/XP (xvid.ax should be in the windows\system32 dir for this)

With regsvr32 I get the same error of the installer:
exception C000001D.
My amd k6-2 is 400 too, and I play videos quite fine, perhaps thanks to my nvidia geforce 4 videocard.

EDIT: i first thought you were talking about my binary. But then I saw that codec pack stuff...

Dunno what to say, please use gamer's builds for those k6 computers - my old builds might need a SSE capable processor (duron, athlon, p3,...) and I fear they used my build in that codec pack.

I thought with xvid-1.0-beta3 we had that solved (different compiler optimisations), so download the binary from my site and report back if it a) installs and b)plays back correctly.

Yes, I was talking about your installer, and also with the latest 1.0-beta3 I have that problem. I can see the xvid videos but the direct show filter doesn't work. Thanks!

Just Tried your latest build (beta 3) koepi and it has the same problem.

Hm. The only guilty part I can think of is the "strmbase.lib" from the Directshow SDK. I think I still have it compiled with the "old" settings which don't run on a K6.

Expect it to be fixed in the next release.

Got the same problem on my K6-2. Processor related? But why does the registration of the filter already fail?

I just sent my new installer to some k6-guy and he reported that it works like charme :)

So the next release is for everyone again.

(Due to a partition hickup I lost all my previous data and changed the installer system and added some new funky features to it :) ).

Sure. Being a millionaire would be nice too!

Since xvid got some internal reconstructions, dshow and vfw aren't standalone at all anymore, but link dynamically to the core. So it's not as simple to make it a standalone decoder.
