This will be a frustrating post to those who have been reading and reading and reading while waiting to make a post about their project. Many of us have been in the position of saying, " I know enough. Now I'm going to create my masterpiece." Only to run into another problem. I've read many posts here, and in other parts of the forum, that say, "I followed the guides exactly and it still doesn't work. What's wrong?"

I ran into a problem on my first masterpiece that gave me fits. PowerDVd and my player locked up at the end of the movie. Yes, at the end of the movie. This was important to me since I was trying to create a multiple-vts titleset. I stumbled onto the solution--quite by accident--and wanted to post my experience to head off frustration on the part of others.

As preparation, I need to say that I split a large movie to 2 DVD's using IFO Edit. I stopped short of importing the menus because I was going to re-author the movie. Here is an excerpt of the VTS Overview before I did the split.VTS overview:

Menu attributes:
Video: MPEG-2 720x480 (NTSC) (NTSC 525/60) (16:9) (pan-scan)
Audio 1: Not Specified (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC
SubPicture 1: Not Specified (2-bit rle )

Title Set (Movie) attributes:
Video: MPEG-2 720x480 (NTSC) (NTSC 525/60) (4:3) (not specified perm.display)
Audio 1: English (Dolby AC-3) 6ch 48Kbps DRC normal (ID: 0x80)
Audio 2: English (Dolby AC-3) 2ch 48Kbps DRC normal (ID: 0x81)
SubPicture 1: English (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x20)
SubPicture 2: Espaņol (2-bit rle ) (ID: 0x21)

The lines in blue are the key to the problem. As you can see the "real movie" uses VOB ID-1, but the summary line--the first line--indicates the use of two VOB ID's. The second VOB ID is the last line--a layer break at the end of the movie.

When I did the split, I used what IFO Edit suggested. It was the first layer break point--about half way through. What happened then was that Disc 1 contained 28 chapters--down to the red line--without that first layer break. (Please note: I added the red line to show what happened after the split. It was not part of the original overview.) VOB ID-2 had been moved from the end to Chapter 28. This is what locked up the players and gave me a "Can't read file" error in IFO Edit. I removed the offending VOB ID and everything was fine.

I looked at the commands contained in the menus to the entire movie and discovered that the movie used an angle to navigate the layer breaks. I had removed only the Spanish and the 2 channel AC3 when I did the split and left all the other settings at default. This was my mistake--based on lack of knowlege. If I had removed the angle point, I would have been successful. (I re-created the situation after I learned this and removed the angle point.) My knowlege level at the time told me that you could construct geomentric shapes with angles or make white rabbits run across the screen. :)

But I had followed the guides I reviewed three of what I consider the most popular guides for splitting movies. ("Remove Angle Point" is not checked by default in IFO Edit) This is what they said:Guide 1--"Angles and Expert VOB options are up to you."
Guide 2--"All options are already preset properly."
Doom9 Guide--"In case you have multiandgle movies the Angles Section will be acitve. Check Remove Angles and select the angle you want to keep (normally the first one is English and without any extras overlayed over the video."Obviously, the Doom9 Guideis the most precise. Also, in other Doom9 Guides, you will find the statement, "Examine the VTS." This latter is the key. What I found in the VTS Overview above stuck out like a sore thumb--even with my knowlege at the time.

Like I said, I don't know if I would have run into this problem had I imported the menus and made the video manager as the guide directed. This may be an isolated instance that applies only to projects in which you desire to do something else than just split the disc and keep all the original stuff.

Sorry for the length. I hope this helps some.

Good post Farmer Dan....

I wish I had this to read when I was having fits splitting "Die Another Day". I was so sure of myself after >100 successful burns that I broke my own cardinal rule and didn't test on a RW first. I ended up with a movie that switched angles back and forth on me while I just stared at the screen like

I'm sure with all the popular movies out now with angles, this will help a lot of newbies like me. Thanks.

By the way....I see you joined Doom in Sept and you already have 113 posts

You have been a busy man Dan :)
