View Full Version : I still can't get Vobsub subtitles to show in matroska

I have installed the most recent matroska splitter 1019 and VSFilter 2.30.
I used mkvmerge 077 to mux an avi an idx and an aac (mp4). I even tried the most recent mkvmerge uploaded by mosu.
The file muxes fine and no error is displayed when the muxed file is played in WMP or MPC. I haven't tried tcmp5 yet.
DirectVobsub loads when I play the file but no subtitles are shown.
I also tried using override placement just in case the subtitle were offscreen.
I used the subtitle tool that came with Gordian knot 02862 to extract the vobsubs. This gave me and *.idx file and a *.sub file.
On a different note,
Sometimes when i mux an srt file using mkvmerge, the srt subtitles don't show. This is not really a problem because I can just keep remuxing till the srt subs show.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Did I miss something?
I have read all 6 pages the other thread.

Run mkvinfo on your file to make sure that there are blocks for the vobsubs contained in the file.

You might try to change the output settings in MPC. I had to check 'Use regular offscreen plain surfaces' in the VRM7/9 settings.

I've noted the same problem. Mosu mentioned a post in the latest mkvmerge thread which has a post from gabest. Gabest states his filter isn't properly playing them back atm, and his code needs a bit of work.
If you have a look through your encode you will probably find that a vobsub subtitle shows up quite consistently every now and then. Just not all of em show.
All we can do is wait on Gabest for a new filter.

@All
When using srt subtitles, does the order in which I add them into the mmg gui matter? Sometimes when i add the srt then the avi then the mp4 I get no subtitles.
@gizmotech
It's nice to know that I'm not the only one experiencing this problem.
The only weird thing is that it seems to work for everyone else...otherwise there would be more threads on this issue.

I tried it, it still doesn't show.

I have no idea what to look for.

@kastro86
About the more threads issue, you're making the assumption there are that many people out there who a) are following mkv closely enough to know the vobsub improvements are in now b) are currently performing tests c) Are active enough to post feedback.
As well, some subs seem to work perfectly, where as others don't. It's largely random and dependent on the DVD itself.

New gabest VSFilter 2.31 (it is supossed to fix the issue with vobsub in matroska)
But i still have the same problem (some subtitles are shown and other are not).
I have verify the mkv with mkvinfo -v and all the subtitles are in the file (timestamps are ok).
@Gizmo, kastro68, Human_USB:
do you still have the same problems with the new filters?

Not that I saw.
Looking at my test encode of vobsubs it looked like they were there once I updated vsfilter. Though I didn't check em all.

Yes. I am still experiencing the same problems with 2.31. I can't get any Vobsub subtitles to show at all.
I haven't got around to trying it on another system yet. For all I know, it may be my box setup that is at fault.

@gizmotech: i have discussed about this problem before with mosu and the final tip was: wait for an update from Gabest...
Maybe its my PC's fault, i dunno.. but i know my WinXP needs a fresh install... you know, we mess around with codecs and filters all the time :p

If there are still issues with vobsub in MKV, we have to investigate and to report to mosu and gabest.
VLC 0.7.0 is to come soon ( i have a pre already on my HDD ), and it should support vobsub in MKV also. I will keep you guys updated about its release, and would like to ask you to test it on your existing files ....

Try using another player and see if it works there.

You maybe have an old version of vobsub installed ?

I've make it clear in my post that i am using VSFilter 2.33.
Thank you all the same!
**PB is fixed. It seemed my vobsub file(idx and sub) is broken or something.
Maybe is a color issue?
How to set the right color in the vobsub configure when sub color is wrong?
I mean there are four colors right? Is there an ultimate setting that suits all subs?
Regards.

Yes, but if you would have had an old VobSub installed it might have interfered with the new VSFilter.
This is what ChristianHJW meant with his question. :)
Good that the problem is gone, cheers!
