Hello carnageSWE, Welcome to Doom9 forums

I assume that you are trying to copy DVD files to Harddisk.
Do you tried DVDDecrypter ? [http://www.doom9.org/software.htm](Under Descrambling / Ripping tools )

To back up your DVD, you must first "rip" it. You probably will not be able to directly copy from DVD to hard drive. I suggest downloading DVD Decrypter, at the link Tuning provided, and see if that works for you.

Discussion on copying rental DVDs is strictly prohibited here. If you haven't read the forum rules yet, I respectfully request that you do. The only time copying a rental might be okay is if you own the title and can't back up from your copy due to defect or damage.

That said, I believe CSS stands for Content Scrambling System. It's the encryption on video DVDs that programs like DVDDecrypter remove.

I don't know what CPPM stands for, but I believe it is the comparable encryption standard for audio DVDs. To the best of my knowledge there is no DeCPPM solution, but then very few people have ever needed it.

DVDDecrypter is one of the most capable DeCSS tools available, so if you ever have a problem ripping a DVD with other software, you should try DVDDecrypter. VStrip is another very capable DeCSS tool, but is not nearly as easy to use.

In many cases you can rip even a badly scratched DVD, unless it has very deep scratches, or if the scratches are circular and centered on the hub. If a ripper complains, try cleaning the DVD (vinegar or ammonia based window cleaners seem to do a good job). Scratches are a sign the DVD wasn't cared for properly, so it's likely it's full of dirty sticky finger prints too. Remember when cleaning a DVD, always wipe from the hub outwards. Never, ever wipe the DVD in a circular motion.

Also, if you have multiple drives (and it sounds like you do), try ripping in another drive when decrypting fails in the first one. I have an old 2x DVD-ROM drive, and it will often rip DVDs my newer 6x (not new, but newer) drive fails on.

Just get rid of your dvd-rom and get a new one. A buddy of mine had the same problem, replaced drive, and problem solved!
If you want to make a backup of a title YOU OWN and space is a problem, there are progs that exist which allow you to compress without the need to put on your hd first. (i.e. Anydvd) Search the forums for more info.

hi and welcome to the forum,

just wanted to add that at least DVDshrink (and possibly the other two programs mentioned by you in your post) are not able to decrypt an encrypted DVD. in the case of DVDshrink this is the case because of the new german copy right laws that would otherwise make this program completely illegal. without the descrambling mechanism it is still on the edge but on the legal side!

anyway, please make yourself a little more comfortable with the forum rules aswell as the sticky on top of this forum!
a better, more descriptive, title for this thread would be a very good start :)
