View Full Version : Deinterlace video with ffdshow in real time

Hi folks
I've got a video that is heavily interlaced, you can make out the horizontal lines whenever things get moving a bit. I watch in BSPlayer with ffdshow. I've been playing around with the settings for deinterlacing in ffdshow, but apparently it doesn't work that much, the interlacing is still very noticiable.
Is there anything I can do about it? Maybe some settings in particular? There is an option to use a plugin with DScaler but the list is empty. Is it worth to try it? And where could I get it?
Thanks in advance

You can try enabling avisynth-support, loading decomb and apply fielddeinterlace().

It depends on which build you use, that the deinterlace option works or not. Try the 09.27. build.

You must have DScaler installed (or just DScaler's deinterlace dlls in some folder). In ffdshow you should enable deintelacing option, select Dscaler plugin option, and in suboption named "DScaler" enter path to your plugin (or just browse to it, EDIT: plugins are named DI_nameofplugin.dll ) and set strength using slider below.

indeed, i'd suggest to start with the bob plugin DI_Bob.dll (most simple, and theoretically, most accurate. although not always the best looking). been working well enough for me.
cheers and good luck

FFDshow + AVISynth + DeComb is the best to my eyes :)

I agree, but AVISynth require basic knowlege in scripting (alltough very simple). This method is just "checking boxes and moving sliders". Also, DScaler's filters are optimized for real time viewing.

Ok, thanks for the replies.
I've tried DScaler version 3.1.0, latest stable version according to the website at http://deinterlace.sourceforge.net/downloads.htm
and BSplayer (or Windows Media Player) hangs every time I try to load a plugin. I tried Bob, ScalerBob, VideoBob and some others, it hangs everytime, with any video file. I'm using BSplayer ver 0.86 and Win XP Pro.
Any idea?
Thanks

DScaler is not very good about posting official new stable releases. I think 3.1 is maybe a couple years old and does not have most any of the advanced filters you hear folks talking about.
Try V 4.1x or higher.

Dscaler 4.01 was even worse. I couldn't open the properties window for ffdshow, it would hang!! I even had to reinstall ffdshow after that.
I think I'm gonna leave the Dscaler thing alltogether, I had a quick look at their forum and there didn't seem to be much help.
I can try the avysinth+decomb thing but I don't know much about scripting in it. Could someone post a sample please?

Hi clairvo,
I made a post in the HDTV / DVB / TiVo forum and I thought I'd post my findings here as well:
On deinterlacing in ffdshow: I find that all settings except DScaler suck..
I tried all the settings after which i downloaded and installed DScaler (newest beta), using the DScaler-Greedy setting (greedy .dll - most of the others DScaler presets seemed to crash/hang by the way..). The result: Much better than all the options in ffdshow (most of those ffdshow settings don't deinterlace at all it seems..). What are your impressions and tips on this, any favourite setting?
Too bad I can't play around with the other DScaler presets without having an application crash. The greedy setting that I used has some tweakable parameters though iirc.
Has someone compared the DScaler presents with the avisynth deinterlacing for realtime playback?

@snoddas:
1st, ffdshow does NOT suck. it's probably the best app of its kind, so make your research before you jump into conclusions. it's a work in progress, and much progress it has. it's not the best deinterlacer, i agree to that, but it does allow you to use plugins.
now, from my comparisions, any deinterlacing with avisynth (even just clip.bob) would be slower compared to ffdshow+dscaler plugins.
you're welcome to come up with your own results of course.

Well, I'll just type it once more then:
On deinterlacing in ffdshow: I find that all settings except DScaler suck..
How that necessarily makes ffdshow itself suck is beyond me. Every app can have weak and strong features.
Back to the question, do you have any favourite settings for DScaler? Perhaps I've ruled out some of the ffdshow built-in deinterlacers, any fav. there?
PS. I'm using a recent version of ffdshow: http://athos.leffe.dnsalias.com/ffdshow-20031128.exe

snoddas,
I have been using ffdshow to deinterlace PAL video very successfully.
Ffmpeg deinterlace and 5-tap lowpass work best for me.
I have not found any AVI Synth or Vdub deinterlace filters to work any better.
The Dscaler deinterlacers work well but are very slow and are overkill IMHO.
Many of the best video filters available are in Ffdshow and they work in real time.
I have given up on Vdub and AVI Synth filters for most tasks.
I recomend the September build of ffdshow. The newer build is slower.
Regards,
Owen
