Hi have a a pioneer ao4 and i'm ripping at 2x and was wondering if there is a drive out there that would rip faster. i have heard that poeple get up to speeds of 12x. what is the best drive for ripping at that speeds? perfferably a combo drive. i was thinking of getting the samsung sm-352b it's 16x dvd and 52x24x52. IS that drive any good for ripping? thanks for the help

Um, I doubt anyone can answer that. Very few people go out and buy every drive ever made to test their ripping performance.

I've been quite happy with my el-cheapo LiteOn DVD-ROM drive. On clean DVDs I see rip speeds between 6x and 8x. I'd advocate using a standard DVD-ROM drive for ripping, as it saves wear-and-tear on the more expensive burner.

Just get any DVD drive that isn't fuzzy about no-brand CD/DVD. I have pioneer 16x DVD drive and it can rip the whole DVD withing 10 minutes. Just make sure you enable DMA mode.

that, or you could install the hacked bios that lets you rip at faster speeds...

on the other hand, RWs seem to me more reliable.
It happened to me more than once DVDdecrypter failed when using the DVD-ROM (ripping @12-16x) but the DVD-RW did the same DVDs without complain, just only at 2x (both are sony).

It's more reliable because it runs at lower speed. Notice that whenever your DVD drive runs into an error section, it'll run slower. This is due to error correction mechanisms. That means slower speed can handle error thingie better than faster speed.

Also, in my opinion, I think DVDRW(+/-) has better error correction due to it can write a blank DVD.

BTW you can have both DVD & DVDRW drives. Use DVD drive first for speed. If you got problems, just use the latter.

The LiteOn drive has been in the top ten on this site since it arrived.
I have one and am very pleased with its performance....

I have the liteon 411s and ripping anywhere from 6x to 12x depending on the dvd. A major upgrade from my Sony 500ax that was only ripping at 2x.

I have an LG with multi-region firmware update and that gets into the 8x frequently, I also use a read only drive for ripping to save my burner:)
