MPEG4 compatible or NOT?

I found such definition of visual profiles in "Overview of the MPEG-4 Standard":

The Simple Visual Profile provides efficient, error resilient coding of rectangular video objects, suitable for applications on mobile networks, such as PCS and IMT2000.

The Advanced Simple Profile looks much like Simple in that it has only rectangular objects, but it has a few extra tools that make it more efficient: B-frames, ¼ pel motion compensation, extra quantization tables and global motion compensation.

I'm not 100% sure, that extra quantization tables means quantizer matrices in XviD. So, if I use "hvs-good-matrix", will be movie 100%-compatible with MPEG4, with Simple Profile, with Advanced Simple Profile?

I was under the impression that extra quant tables meant MPEG quant only. (not MPEG-custom)

Simple profile only supports what is known as the H.263 matrix in Xvid. Advanced Simple includes the MPEG matrix which can be edited to any quant table you want (MPEG-custom). The 0.9.X branches are all SP only, the dev branches are ASP. So no, you can't use custom matrixes (or B-frames, or qpel, or gmc) if you want to stay compliant with Simple Profile. However, Simple's level definitions are really restrictive as well. The highest, L3, only supports a max resolution of 352x288 and 15 fps, with a max bitrate of 384 kbps. So if you're doing any kind of normal encode you're probably going to need to use AS@L5 (max frame size 720x586, 30fps, 8 mbps) to maintain compatibility.

That's not to say a Simple Profile decoder couldn't play something out of the range of the defined levels, but if you want to be on the safe side you're better off sticking to AS@L5.
