View Full Version : Deleting content from a video_ts.vob

Just when I think i've got the "Big 3" method down I hit a speed bump... I'm trying to backup my "The Royal Tenebaums" criterion movie disc (disc 1). I completed the project no problemo with the Big 3, but just as I'm about to do the ifoupdate step I notice that the video_ts.vob is 175 MB and contains the two trailers of the movie. I would really like to cut this down to a couple MBs in order to use that space for a higher bitrate. I've tried using Ifoedit to strip the 2 VOB IDs (each trailer is a vob ID) via the 'menu extras' button in Ifoedit, but if I uncheck both VOBids Ifoedit goes through the "processing" of the vobs, but doesn't write a new small VOB to the destination directory. If I unselect just 1 VOB ID then it actually writes the files which is now around 70 MB, but I would like to get it to a couple MB if not lower with a "dummy" video_ts.vob, but I am reading that this screws up menu navigation when i search the forum. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Even better check out Numenu4u....
It'll reauthor your menu files automagically (DoItFast4u 1.3.4 includes integration)
I've had a 300mg menu reauthor to under 100mg before... my guess you can get down to 50/60mg easy

Thanks for the response.
The problem is though that the file I want to cut down in size is the video_ts.vob (which is 175 MB). The menu file is in VTS_01.vob (which is 9 MB, and doesnt require re-authoring). As far as I can tell the video_ts.vob plays no role in how the disc plays, when I insert the disc, it goes straight to the menu. But I need to find a way to cut that 175 MB way down in size (would like to cut down to a few MB) without screwing up navigation or the disc's ability to play in a standalone dvd player.

I'm doing this exact disc and ran into the same problem. And the answer is....NuMenu4U. If you select the option for "detect and replace fake/dummy..." it will removed both trailers and give you a VIDEO_TS.VOB that is 60kb in size.
Just replace the orginal VIDEO_TS.bup, .ifo, and .vob with the new ones, run IfoEdit to Get VTS Sectors, and you should be all set.
IF anyone else is doing Royal Tenenbaums you should also check out this thread:

which talks about the problem with the DD5.1 AC3. I recommend the method by Dinston using Besplit over the AC3 Machine method. It is quicker and it doesn't require a reencode of the audio, so it sounds better too.

My experience is that with IFOEdit you must keep at least one VOBID, so if there's a super short one like one of those 15-framers then you're lucky (e.g. Sex and the City). However, I would imagine in your case it isn't, so the best shot is use IFOEdit and keep only one VOBID, then DVDShrink or NuMenu that one to super-minimum (like slideshow or super-low bitrate). You might be able to strip the audio stream vid IFOEdit/DVDShrink/etc. too but I'm not sure since seriously I have never done that myself...

Another possible option is to use MenuEdit (unfortunately it's payware though)...you can replace the trailers with a few frames of black and then use IFOEdit to write new IFOs for the menu vob.

Check out the guide for 'Blanking out VTS sets', only apply this to the VIDEO_TS files. Replace VIDEO_TS.VOB with the 10kb VOB with 1 VOB ID/1 cell. Update via IfoEdit. I've done this on ~15 DVDs so far, and all play back perfectly on every standalone (and PC/Xbox) I've tried --> that's about 10 different players. It's quick and get's the job done.

It's one of 2COOL's guides in the IFO/VOB Editing forum here in the doom9 forums. Look for a sticky in that forum for 2COOL's Cheat Sheets.
