i'm not exactly sure why but a lot of the movies i'm encoding end up being too big. i set the total file size in gnot to 700mb, but they often go over by 5-18mb.

also, i tried trimming the videos, but sometimes there isnt that much to trim, so i don't know how to get the file sizes down to fit in an 80min cd

any suggestions?

Welcome to Doom9's forum, shattertruth.

Post any of your Gknot_log files for one of the ones that went over size. There may be something in the log that points to a procedural problem with your consistant oversizes. But here are a few things to think about, and possibly try... 700MB = 716800 KB. It is possible that you are not seeing oversized results, merely using the Windows Explorer, which shows size in KB. If that's the case, then you may not be going over size at all.

Many CD-Rs have a capacity slightly larger than the rated capacity. You may be able to use that extra space with some CD burning software, and drives that support it. It's called "overburning" and can sometimes help if you're just a few MB over size. You may be able to do it, depending on media, burning hardware, and burning software.

Some excise the end credits. You may wish to do that.

Some re-transcode the audio at a lower bitrate. You may wish to do that.

Those who are doing the end-credits separately may re-encode them at an even lower bitrate.

Some people set their CD size in Gknot to 690 or 695MB, in case they go slightly over.

There are even tools to get 800MB from a 700MB CD by creating a non-standard data disk. You give up any error correction / protection, and any standard access to the CD-R data. (700MB data CDs have about 100MB of error protection. That's why VCDs/SVCDs can fit 800MB on a 700MB disc ... the MPEG streams include error protection data. Creating a "data CD" with this method requires special software, and since AVI doesn't have error protection, it is risky for AVI files.)
