So, I'm having trouble finding guides that seem to apply to current versions of gknot, so I have some questions :)

First off, under bitrate... In this case I want to split the movie into two 700meg cd's. So under total size, I set 1cd to 700mb, I click on split final file into cd's and then 2cd's, in total file size, nothing changes. It's says 1571419KB/1535MB. Is this the size of the 2cd's total? If I click back on 1cd, nothing changes, shouldn't the total sizes change? I can't click on caculate avi file size, I get an error, somthing about floating point operation. This is the latest gknot and the update.

The next question is after I click add job, I choose my settings for audio 1 and click add job to que, I then get an error that says I have to use a falue between .24 and 4000 which I have to click ok on about 10 times and then the dialog for divx5 settings comes up. Under encoding bitrate, it's set to 0kbps and I have to manually set this to somthing. Same thing happens for nth pass. So what do I set this to? I seem to remember in older versions, I told gknot how big I wanted the final avi to be and it would set the bitrate for me.

Are there any current guides I can look this up in?

thanks for reading this far :)

Something is certainly odd. As I understand it, you are using the default mode, which on the Bitrate tab is "Calculate Average Bitrate."

If, in the Total Size section, you set "1 CD =" to 700MB and press the 2 CD button, the total file size should read 1400 MB (1433600 KB). But if you've been modifying the sizes or bitrates manually, you could end up with this problem.

I do not know how you got into that mess, but I was able to recreate your problem by editing the file size manually,

If you close your .d2v or other input file, you can press the "Reset" button and reset this particular movie's GKnot settings back to default. Failing that, you might try moving to the Options tab, and press the "Delete Registry Keys" button, exit and restart. This will remove all your Gknot settings and return them to the default.

Thank you for the reply. If I hit reset, the total file size goes back to 716800KB (700megs), I load my dv2 and it's all fine, then when I select my audio track for audio A it goes up to 1558986.

Am I not supposed to be selecting the audio manually or somthing?

You must be using the "Calculate AVI File Size" mode, then. In the default "Calculate Average Bitrate" mode, you would see your video bitrate drop instead when you added the soundtrack to the calculation.

In the audio A section, you would either select a bitrate or a size, not both. That section is to account for the space your soundtrack will consume in the finished AVI. Select a bitrate if your process will include reencoding, for example, from Dolby Digital to MP3. The bitrate you select will have the calculator estimate a soundtrack size, based on that bitrate.

Selecting the file or typing in an actual file size is to be used only when no reenncoding will be performed, such as when planning to use a Dolby Digital (.ac3) soundtrack as-is, or when the reencoding has already been done outside of Gknot. In this case, you would be also be selecting the audio file again when preparing to encode, on the Audio 1 tab, and then selecting "just mux".Did that help explain it? From what I can gather so far, I believe you may have added your .ac3 file's current size to your calculator, rather than an already encoded .mp3 file or using an estimate of size it will be after reencoding into MP3.

[EDIT: As far as I can tell, Doom9's last update to his Gknot guides was October 23, less than a month ago, and the section that discusses the Audio A section was last updated in April. It shows the second option, selecting the audio file to get the filesize, because if you are follow the guide step-by-step, R4R has alreadyb been used to reencode the audio.]
