No DMA option for harddrive or dvd drive

Hi folks,
I have a clients PC here and have a problem in that the usual DMA check boxes are missing in Device Manager. He has big problems playing back DVDs as a result. This is a recent fresh install of Win98se. The chipset is a Intel 815 jobbie and I have tried the Intel (http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/815.htm) chipset drivers all ready to no avail. I have tried entring safe mode and removing the drives too but no joy. Again, no DMA for hdd and dvd.
Does anybody know of even a reg hack that might enable DMA?
I'm at a loss here. :(

Do you enabled DMA options in BIOS ??
If it is not a original intel M/B, then check on the manufactures website.

Hey Edge, have you installed also the "Intel Application accelerator" drivers? Uninstall it ASAP because these drivers are the reason for this problem, uninstall it and then roll-back IDE controller drivers to its original state, should fix it.

It's an OEM mobo.....Gateway. I used to work for GW tech support and know this board inside out. Never seen this issue before with this mobo using Win9x/2000/XP.:confused:

It was pretty much a fresh install of Win98se when it landed on my doorstep so there were no drivers installed (well no mobo drivers anyway) And it being Win98 I can't roll back the driver like XP can. Maybe whatever the owner has done in some way has messed it up.

Damn. I hate to see this thing beat me. Could be looking at a quick format/install. I might test with a different hdd first. Cheers for the reply lads.

I understood that it wasn't a winxp install lol :) I meant that you could've try manually replacing IDE controller drivers (whatever they are) back into original win98 standard drivers (properties>update driver>standard IDE controller) anyway another solution could be complete uninstall of ACPI , Give it a go, perhaps full hardware re-detection will help.

I've tried removing/reinstalling ACPI and nadda.
Also, removed INFs and reinstalled the IDE controller drivers from Win98 cd so they have to be the MS generic ones. I'm at a loss here so I was really looking for a reg hack to force the DMA to be enabled, check box or no check box.

I found this (http://4peeps.com/ivb/index.php?showtopic=399) possile fix online so I'll have a look at it tomorrow in work. I'll be backing up reg beforehand!

Its only a suggestion, I have found many PCs with damaged IDE cables.
Thus if both HDD & DVD are on same IDE, there is a possibility of damaged cable.

I've tested with a second hdd and it seems fine. That reg fix didn't seem to improve anything on the other hdd. Looks like I'll be formatting the thing. I've checked IDE cables too and they're ok.

Hi,

I've had the same problems you described before on WinXP. There has been a thread about this problem, but I can't seem to find it.
I believe your problem has to do with software (windows) and not your hardware. I has to do something with read errors, when you copy or rip a cd/dvd to your hdd and windows encounters read errors it automatically goes (temperaroly) from dma to pio-mode. If windows has this problem too many times it will think your hdd and/or dvd-drives has got structural read problems and it will set dma to pio mode.

The solution (make sure you've backed up your essential data!):
my computer/device manager/ide-controller (or something called like this).
Under ide-controller you will find primary and secundary.controller, in which you can't change from pio to dma.
Now delete both the primary and secundary (again: make a backup) controller, reboot your system. If all goes well, Windows will install your ide-controller again and reset pio-mode back to dma-mode.

I'm not sure if you are having the same problem i've had, and I don't know if it will work under win98. But the solution worked for me.
