I've been using DVD Shrink for a long time, and I always have trouble fast forwarding if I reauthor. Is this a common problem? Does it have something to do with taking out the menus when you reauthor? I can navigate by chapter just perfectly, but sometimes I need to fast forward. This only happens when I split a disc using start and end, or I reauthor

Also, is there any way to use the start and end function before reauthoring (I typically backup long DVD 9's to 2 disks by using start and end). I would like to keep the menus for both part of the discs? I've searched and I've found no way to reauthor with menus.

The second problem isn't really a problem, but just an inquiry. The first problem is kinda bugging me.

Welcome to the forums, DK64_MASTER. :)

"Also, is there any way to use the start and end function before reauthoring...?"
In one word, nope.

"I've been using DVD Shrink for a long time, and I always have trouble fast forwarding if I reauthor..."
I've been using it for a while too and never have trouble fast forwarding (I mainly do movie-only backups using re-author).
What version are you using?
Does this forwarding problem appear on both the "shrunk" files (played from your hard-drive) and the burned backups?

I am using 3 beta 3. I've tried beta 5 but it doesn't work either.

It can't fastforward on my hd or on the standalone.

Thanks for your help...:)

When you say you can't fast-forward, do you mean while playing a title (e.g, the main movie), or from one title to another (e.g, movie to extras, one extra to another,...)?

In any case, I would suggest you use beta 5, whether it fixes your problem or not. :)

Ya... I have beta 5 on my sister's account, and beta 3 on my account (I guess I'm a bit lazy to upgrade mine).

I mean fast forwarding by using the scan button the dvd remote for a standalone DVD player. It works fine for single layer movies, or short dual layer movies with menus, so I assume menus are the problem. I use Nero and DVD decrypter to burn. Actually I rarely shrink DVD 5 movies unless they are eposidic.

I used to backup DVDs using DVD Fab, but spliting movie using start and end seemed to be much quicker. I also didn't get that annoying "insert disc 2... etc blah blah blah" message and have to skip by chapters.

Speaking of chapter, DVD's backed up using DVDshrink can be fast forwarded by using the chapter search (next) button, but sometimes its easier to fast forward.

I tried fast forwarding on my software DVD player using CYBERLINK POWER DVD, and it doesn't work at all. If I use the seek bar (not the fast forward buttons) it works, but the movie ends up being all jumpy until I stop (not pause).

I hope this clarifies the problems I am having...

Once again, thank you for your help :D

I too have this problem with fast forwarding when checking my new copy on my laptop. I dont see any real world problems when playing it, but still is somethin I noticed a few times;)

It may be because I'm using Nero to burn. I will check a dvd burned with IMG_TOOL/DVD Decrypter vs. Nero.

I'm pretty sure I get the same results.

I'm 100% sure that if I don't reauthor, the dvd works fine.

I remember when I was using beta 3 that I was getting the same error, but not with beta5

1) I've never had a problem FF when using v2.3 or 3.0 b5. My problem is just getting some picky standalones to play the discs. When I do get them to work all functions work fine.

2) I've found that the easiest way to split a dvd9 to 2 discs and keep menus is with dvdxcopy, not express, but I stopped using it awhile back and don't know if it's still setup that way. I mainly do movie onlys any more.

Ok I'll try Beta 5. Maybe I got confused with something else.

I don't like DVDXCopy because it inserts a watermark, and actually compresses the video.

Even if the video is compressed professionally, I still prefer 2 disc backups.

@DK64_MASTER

"Even if the video is compressed professionally, I still prefer 2 disc backups."

Why not download a copy of IFOedit? It'll split a DVD 9 over two DVDRs, and it's a free download. At least, this way, if you like it... gravy! If not... well, then at least you didn't shell out anything for it. It'll also let you make "movie-only" DVDs while removing the infamous "layer break" sequences that cause certain players to pause. Every now and then, you'll run into DVDs that you can create "movie-only" copies of, that don't require any compression in order to make it fit a single DVDR. All chapter points are kept accurate -- and I haven't encountered problems with navigation using it. It may be worth the time to check out the forum thread that's dedicated to IFOedit, read up on it, and see what you think.

Cheers, and good luck!

I actually have IFO edit, but the interface looks a bit complicated to me. I don't really have a major problem with fast forwarding since I usually navigate by chapters, and it seems to me that the DVD Shrink/Nero method works the fastest.

I'll read up about it, but I'll probably stick to DVD Shrink.

Thanks for the information. :)

Dvdxcopy Express will compress the the video but as far as I know the regular version Dvdxcopy doesn't (or didn't, it has been awhile since I've used it).
Does it actually put a watermark on the video, or just the warning screen? If it does put a watermark is that just for unregistered versions? If it puts a watermark on registered versions don't waste your time with it!

When I did use xcopy (maybe 9 months ago) it split a dvd9 to 2 disc without any compression and kept all menus. When the vid on the first disc ended it would say "please insert disc 2" and disc 2 would auto play where 1 left off (could be changed in settings). Disc 2 would have all the extras (if any) on it.
Also, there were ways you could easily get around the warning screen xcopy left (and other things xcopy does). I don't know if it's still possible today but with a little forum searching you should have an answer.

I'm pretty sure about the watermark. And, I can just Use DVD FAB for what XCOPY does for free :D.

Have you heard about Platinum? What does it do different?

"Have you heard about Platinum? What does it do different?"
Work even less reliably. :)

Yeah that's what I though. I have also heard that there are some DVDs such that can't be backed-up using andy "XCopy" software. These included flipper DVDs. I know how to get rid of the copyright screen, but it takes too long. And the watermark just makes me feel uneasy. I much prefer DVD Shrink/Nero or DVD Shrink/IMGtool.
