The Fraunhofer IIS just released (http://www2.iis.fraunhofer.de/mpeg4software.html) a free (demo - until December 31.) version of it's MPEG-4 encoder and player:
- Support of the MPEG-4 Audio AAC-LC and AAC-LTP object types
- Support of the MPEG-4 Simple and Advanced Simple Visual Profiles
- Support of the MPEG-4 Fileformat
- Support of the ISMA Specification 1.0 for RTP/RTSP streaming of MPEG-4 content over IP
- Support of the 3GPP Fileformat and the 3GPP specification for RTP/RTSP streaming
Anyone took a look at this and can comment on quality/speed?

works fine here...
and btw
After this date, selected features of the software will be disabled while still allowing basic operation.
they did not mention their "basic operations"... my guess - generic mpeg-4 playback :D
Edit: isn't it better to move this thread into the "New A/V Formats - Codecs" section...

"Hangware" - is probably no common expression in germany; please explain: Will someone hang you if you do something wrong?!

speed: 424seconds to encode a clip with 451 second on an athlon XP 2400+
quality: haven't found a way to playback the file up to now
did anyone find a way to playback one of the .mp4 files ?
(created by the encoder, the sample files from there homepage run fine on my system)
Doh, they also got a player (iisMP4play.msi) on their ftp:
ftp://ftp1.fraunhofer.de/institute/iis/amm/mpeg-4/ which plays the encoded file just fine,...
=> quality: looks kind of smoothed, but can't say for sure since the player doesn't support fullscreen
