View Full Version : Altering Dynamic Range Compression in existing AC-3

After reading SomeJoe's post about the proper way to encode AC3, I realize I did it wrong (I never looked for a reference dB level in the WAV's). So I am wondering if there is a way I can strip the existing range compression profile out of the AC3 and get the un-adulterated audio out of it. Or is it possible to alter the Dialog Norm dB level in an existing AC3?

I made these 2ch AC3's from 48kHz WAV's using Scenarist's AC3Enc. The Compression Characteristic was set to "File: Standard", and RF Overmodulation Protection was enabled. I took a screen shot of the settings screen if you need more details.

Sadly I've already deleted the original sources for this project, and since they were captures off a tv broadcast, they are irreplaceable. I never noticed this problem on my last dvd project, so I don't know why I hear it now, but now that I know, I want to fix it. Any help to correct this audio is greatly appreciated ;]

After playing around a bit, I managed to convert one of my AC3's back to a WAV and encode it with what I believe to be the proper settings for that WAV, however I am not sure if the WAV I generated is really the unmodified audio.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am under the impression that the volume of the audio in the AC3 is not actually changed when it is encoded, but instead there is an associated value for each portion of the audio that tells the decoder how loud to play it.

If that is true, then there should be a way to ignore the boost / dampening instructions and just get the "original" audio out of it. I tried using BeSweet and Azid. I loaded the AC3, targeted a new WAV and unchecked everything, so there are no switches being used. The command line for it was simply:

"C:\Program Files\BeSweetv1.4\azid.exe" "d:\s1e01.ac3" "d:\s1e01.wav"

And here is the status printout from Azid

I'm using Azid.exe v1.8 build 825 and have been reading the documentation like a good little boy, so I think did everything I can, but I don't know if it's what I want... According to the ReadMe for Azid, the default dynamic compression in the decoder is none. So does that mean it does not pay attention to the dyn.comp. that the AC3 was encoded with? Giving me the original untouched audio?
