Welcome to the DV forum.
I don't know if your "Sonic My DVD" is a DV editing program. If it is not, you need at least a program to download the DV from your camcorder (which has to be connected to the PC via firewire). You can use DVIO - see the sticky thread named "Links".
If you want to edit your DV AVI, you need a program like Ulead VideoStudio, Ulead MediaStudio Pro, Adobe Premiere, Pinnacle Studio, MGI VideoWave, or any other DV editing program. Some are for beginners, some are professional (and the price is professional, too).
To convert your DV into MPEG-2 for DVD proceed like described in the "DV to DVD" guide. You'll then need a DVD authoring software; if you can live withouth menus, IFOEdit is a free authoring software you can use. In the end you need a DVD capable burning program like Nero, or you have a DVD authoring software with burning support included (e.g. DVDlab).
I hope this helps with the first steps. Happy filming!
