I wish to move my vcd collection to DVD. I prepared the audio and video sources as suggested. Demuxed with TMPGEnc, used BESWEET to convert the audio to 48Kz AC3.

Authored it in DVD-IT PE!, tested inside the app, plays perfectly. Prepare the dvd files. Load PowerDVD5 and open dvd files on disk, plays perfectly.

Burn them (using Clonedvd) to a DVD+RW. Open this disk in PowerDVD and it plays perfectly, take it to standalone (Pioneer DV-525), menu appears, select an item to play, plays 3 seconds then freezes. Fast forward moves you through the feature, when play is selected again it just freezes.

I have repeated the test with a DVD+R disk, same results.

Have I missed something obvious, or am I just using the wrong authoring program?

This is a tough one.

Obviously your player can handle +disks since it can display the menu. Also it mustn't has any problem with the structure since it can forward through it. All the above means that by large percentage the authoring prog isn't making anything wrong.

Have u loaded the video_ts.ifo in ifoedit and performed a 'Get VTS Sectors"?
Have u made an image to burn or u just burnt the 2 folders?
Does another brand standalone has the same problems or similar in playback?
Have u checked with a dvd-r (minus) disk?
Have u checked with a better brand dvd+r?

1. IfoEdit found a couple of errors, which I let it fix. Made no difference.
2. I used the option in CloneDvd to "write existing data", went back to DVD-It and burnt it directly from there. No difference.
3. Well....just tried the +RW disk in my daughter's El Cheapo player and it works perfectly....
4. Burnt a -R disk, Pioneer still doesn't like it.
5. I am using Ritek G-04 disks.
6. If I simply make a backup copy of a commercial disk, the Pioneer will play both a + and a - disk.

I'll see if I can try another authoring program, failing that I'll have to swap standalone's with my daughter ;-)

altho mpeg1 can be used on DVD's, and VCD's use mpeg1, VCD allows a larger GOP size than DVD, and thats my guess why its happening on the pioneer ;)

That was the answer, 3 extra GOP frames. Transpires the source was NTSC (18 GOP frames) which had been converted to PAL (15 GOP frames). I did a quick convert back to NTSC with TMPGEnc, problem went away.

Thanks.
