View Full Version : Any Word On DVDShrink Development?

Hello, all!

Sorry to sound so impatient! But, the last I heard on this forum, DVDshrink was wrapped up until November. Well, with this being November, and all... I figured I'd spring the question again, and see if anyone's heard any news lately.

--Cheers!

I am tired waiting for this release

The solution is simple - just write your own transcoder and then give to all of us....and do it fast! :)

I couldn't agree more. First it was October (even that was a little hard to swallow back then) then early November. The last version came out in mid August, which was a beta (!).

And please don't get me wrong: If it wasn't for the damn layer-break all that would be not that big of a deal.

Please give us some update!

to all the impatient people, please give the guy some slack, it will come when it's ready but you shouldn't start asking where it is or even for news. How would you like it if people started pestering you?

I'm pretty sure as soon as any news is released, it will be posted here within the day :D

My bet is on ReJig. ;)
It's opensourced so when one programmer gets tired other one can take it from there. It's just a matter of convenience- and more free flow of ideas.

I second that. ;)

dvdshrink has to earn a living like everybody else (well, those old enough to need to).
He procures the "DVD backupers" with a great free software he develops in his own spare time.
If you're not willing to accept his schedule is not based on DVD Shrink, and that there are events that can delay its release, then I'd suggest you get yourself a commercial software, which you'd be fully untitled to complain about.
If you'd rather not, just be patient and take better care of your DVDs.

Whoa, horsey!

I wasn't meaning to pester or apply pressure to Mr. Shrink. I'm extremely grateful for everything the man's already done! DVD Shrink is among my favorite backup programs... is it wrong to be currious about what lies ahead? Of course I understand the need to put food on the table; I'm a working-class man with mouths to feed, too. It was just a question from someone who wanted to know if anyone had an answer. Which is why this forum exists, right?

Peace! And cheers!

Me neither :)

It is precisely the purpose of A forum
Mr shrink should Take care of our requests, even if dvdshrink is not a commercial software

@ writersblock29,

Sorry, I should have stated my reply was meant for audioman and samtroy. ;)

@ audioman,
That's not what you say, it's the way you say it.
Ex: "Mr shrink should Take care of our requests, even if dvdshrink is not a commercial software"
Should he? Why?

I would like to add I'm not dvdshrink's spokeperson.
I am also only expressing my opinion.

@audioman

Nah... DVDshrink isn't endebted to us. We've paid nothing for his software, and it does, indeed, work. Our suggestions help him to decide into what direction to take his program -- but if I were him, I'd take all suggestions with a grain of salt. I've read many posts from users who feel the software is fine just the way it is; so to that end, he's already satisfied many people by meerly doing things as he sees fit. My angle on this was that, if Nero Recode has functions that Shrink does not, what might we expect from an official DVD Shrink release? Again, curiousity. Nothing more.

If he listened to all suggestions, then this program would wash dishes and wax your car while you wait an incredible five minutes for it to finish Deep Analysis on a Pentium 2 processor. He'd HAVE to be behind his monitor all day long, 24/7. With no financial return for the time invested. Of course, with Thanksgiving coming, and all, I think his time is better spent away from the computer for a bit.

I just wanted to know what he's got up his sleeve in the meantime.

Cheers, and happy shrinking!

I am extremely happy with the current ver3beta5. But I am also waiting very anxiously for the next release to see what features Mr. Shrink will implement.

The layer break issue will undoubtedly be fixed...but I haven't had any issues with that at all on my older DVD player. And since I hate menus/extras/trailers....I could care less about the most requested feature - to retain working menus and allow removal of individual titles.

And according to the rumors, Shrink will revert back to the old ver2.3 style of reauthoring (which I like better, but the newer style works just fine as well). And customizable GUI? Nice but I can live without it.

The only feature that I really want that will likely not be implemented is the combining of severla titlsets into one (for backing up episodics and helpful when doing a lot of trimming of a DVD - I tend to remove intros/credits of each episode).

Anyways, I sense some folks have gotten their message across incorrectly because of language barriers. I sure hope so because I would think it would be quite arrogant of anyone to demand anything of the author of a free program!

Feel free to inquire politely. Feel free to make requests - keeping in mind that if your request comes across as demanding or rude - it will likely be ignored. And any questions by the same poster for any advice in the future will likely be ignored. Be rude at your own risk.

Mr. DVDShrink doesn't have to do squat for us. You should be more thankful instead of harrasing the guy.

If they were sending the author email or mail or leaving messages on his voicemail, that would be "pestering" him. Merely asking about it in the forum is not the same as pestering him. Not even close. He may not even read this forum anymore...who knows. With no news at all and the weeks going by its understandable that someone would ask if there's any news.

I don't agree with the guy who complains though. Simply asking what's new is ok..but don't complain about a free gift. That's only going to make sure the author doesn't work on it anymore.

I guess I was talking about people in general from all forums including the DVDShrink forum and not just singling out a few in this forum

I think schud's link to the 'free pies' thread sums it all up nicely ;)

I try not to assume or infer what someone may have "meant". You have to go by a person's words..otherwise you're just guessing!
Unless I know you personally there's no way for me to know what you meant if its not in your words.

Anyway thanks for clearing it up.

@atreides93 and MackemX

You know, as much as I love the written word (hence my screen name), it never fails to amaze me just how lacking a word on either paper or a computer screen truely is. No body gestures. No "tone of voice." Sarcasm sounds serious. "Ho hum" comments sound like a major concern. Sure, the smiley faces sorta-kinda help... but we're bound to trip over one another sooner or later. Especially with those whose mother tongue isn't English!

It's still a rather small price to pay for being able to participate in a forum such as this!

Cheers to all!

I think there is an art is being able to interpret the words as they were mean't by the poster :)

I know mine was a mistake that couldn't really be interpreted so I stated the fact. Only I know what I mean't as atreides93 stated. Maybe a few did realise what I mean't but it was certain smilies in this thread that made me think of other posts elsewhere in the DVDBackup world

I guess if I was to comment on the lack of a freeware release I would be :(. If it was a commercial product I had paid for that had kept extending the expected update release date then it's a different matter as I'd be

p.s. not at anyone here but I hate these guys that do correct grammar and spelling in forums and seem to do it for a living :D

@MackemX

I can't help it! I write... STUFF... in my spare time. Short stories (some published -- most, not!). Novels (none yet published). Even a screenplay. Which leads to my interest in movies and DVDs -- and vice versa. At least my spelling is still sometimes quite atrocious!

I'm always amazed how people can put pen to paper and write novels, screenplays etc. It must be great to have that as a talent as I can't imagine how people can come up with story lines such as the Lord of the Rings etc

I can't even think of a simple lie when I've been caught doing something I shouldn't have ;), never mind come up with something like that

How about everybody just agrees that everything DVD Shrink does is great and we appreciate it all?

And we are all EXCITED about any upcoming releases! Not impatient, not anxious, not expecting anything. Just excited.

Cause it's 2 pages of Nothing about Nothing...

It started with 2 people being selfish and rude and it took 15 people 2 pages of space to help each other understand what was or was not meant...

What a JOKE... You guys must be bored... I am ... that's the only reason I posted this... Ha Ha...

These should be called "Seinfeld" threads...

(threads that end up being about "nothing") ;)

yes - I realise the irony of adding "nothing" to the thread myself.

Actually, your post has been the most helpful of all in this thread. It was from you that I learned the proper spelling of Seinfeld. I have been spelling it Sienfeld until now.

Thank you...
