Been reading here since mid 2002 or so. First DVD backup was with CladDVD and DVD2AVI following some poor guide on vcdhelp.com and was terrible. Once I found Doom9 the quality of my backups improved dramatically ;).

I honestly don't think there are that many under 18 interested in DVD backups. Most of my fellow engineering students (who are supposed to be technically versed, right) can barely get their downloaded DivX's to play.

Hi, Tom. May I ask which was the first assembly language you learnt?

My first assembler language was some teaching made up thing that I don't even remember the name of, followed by IBM 360 and Z80 (TRS-80), IIRC. That would have been in the late 1970's.

But I wrote my first "Hello World" program in Fortran back in 1966. After one computer class back then I decided I didn't like it and did not touch computers again for almost 10 years. ;)

Before that, i studied microtech for two years -only to realise hardware does not interest me very much and i were better off making programming my main field.

I started out with turbo pascal with 11 years when my dad was tired of me bugging him about the lisp he wrote and giving me the turbo pascal disks and manuals he hid somewhere, then moved to delphi at the age of ca 14. Then i was into computer music ("techno", but not that dance stuff, rather experimental/jazz) which i did until entering the microtech course. There we learnt C. In compu science we were introduced to Java and ASM, now C again and hopefully soon C++. My leisure time code is still all Delphi (can't get that language out of my head after growing up with it).
Besides programming itself, i think i like math more than most people around me (=.=) and am also a bit interested in computer graphics (old school stuff like BMRT and PovRay mostly).

I don't watch movies often (actually veery few), except anime wich i also buy and encode for about two to tree years now.

My music today cannot easily categorised as i like many "contemporary" styles like, but not limited to, german and french hiphop, punk, reggae, jungle or even metal. -But besides programming and anime there isn't really much time for other things :)

Being a chem fella, they put me to a place where they research different methods of protection from the gases and other stuff that are used in chemical warfare. I was amazed by the quality vs. size, especially because i had a company laptop without DVD drive and the idea to take movies with me on my bussiness journeys looked to good to be true, so i started learning and posting on the old Project-Mayo Forums, then on the DivX.com forums where i met BetaBoy and BlackSun. The rest is history :p ....

i aim to please :) seriously though, there's not really an alternative with most anime content for PAL land.

though new stuff is increasingly coming in a nice IVTC'able form, and so we're moving toward doing speed-up IVTC conversions ourselves here. you wouldn't believe the hard disk space required though... at the moment everything is captured in MPEG-2, but obviously we can't use that as a mastering format, but rather a delivery format. once we get the kinks sorted out on our machines, and get in a new RAID rig with enough space for a week's worth of uncompressed footage, we'll start converting things the nice way wherever possible :)

it's the turps and kero that did it for me. oils smell nice enough (except if you leave a bottle of stand oil open for a night in 30+ degree heat... it's a bit whiffy), but the solvents are quite awful. as a kid i'd leave this stuff in my bedroom. as a consequence i have almost no sense of smell at all...

I'm very skilled in "life science" :D and currently studiing computer science.
One month ago I started to code another gui for avisynth and will release it in
a few weeks.

17, first got into video encoding when I was 16, with my current rig. I started backing up DVDs when I needed to replace my ailing CD-ROM drive with something a bit more potent!

Currently studying I.C.T and Physics at A2, and French and Maths at AS. Those in England will know what I'm on about!

No girlfriend as yet. Still waiting! ;)

I finished my B.S. in Computer and Systems Engineering and my B.S. in Computer Science last year. I specialized in Microprocessor Systems and Computer Architecture (not VLSI). I owe around $40K in University loans. I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to do a Masters.

I have not had a g/f in 6 years since I don't like to stick to one woman :)

I managed to reach 39 recently w/o getting married or being presented with a kid by one of the female I met in my life -- but I'm working on that ;-)
self employed, running a small web company (4 freelancers) in Germany; RL (aka girlfriend) and job dictate the amount of time I can spent with composing: music, graphics, and video lately, and writing.
My first "personal computer" was labeled with "Atari ST 512" back in 1985, mainly to make music with Steinberg's "24 Track" (which evolved into Cubase) and my holy Roland MT-32 -- still using it since then (the MT). I resisted Wintel-PCs and stuck to Ataris (Falcon, TT) personally until the first P4 appeared at the IT horizon, then switched platform due to business needs.
First "GEM" GUI apps written for the ST in Omicron Basic & PureC (Borland clone) in the late 1980s, early '90s, moved to VisualBasic 3-5 with my P4 but stopped writing any GUIs/Win when VB6 hit the shelves.
Since then I "script" in JS and PHP only, and trying to get used to PHP-GTK (for a bit of a GUI) and Python :D

Well i'm 64 and still going strong. Living in Ireland in the wild west. Struggling on dialup (Can't get any sort of broadband and it doesn't look like coming my way for a year of two yet). I have one way satellite alowing downloads but still using dialup for transmit and the service is dabolical(regular dropouts). So I don't get to post that often.

I'm 20, and I'm going into my 3rd year of my Bachelor of Science in IT & Telecomms, which involves a lot of stuff - programming (C, 8051 ASM, Java), databases, radio, frying logic chips ^_^, etc.

General computer nerd, and because I'm a student I don't have that much money so I mainly rely on junk that's being thrown out - let's just say my second PC is a Pentium Pro 200, and in my bedroom there's about 5 hard disks lying around (and the largest one is 6 gigs!), 2 PSUs on the floor, 2 soldering irons, a ZX Spectrum, 2 broken PS2s (though I have a working one that's not on the floor)... my room's full of crap, basically.

I got into messing with video on PCs after getting my first CD burner and DVD player (which could also do SVCDs) in 2003. Then when I started college I became the president of the University of Limerick Games Society (http://www.gsoc.net) (mostly LAN games and paintball these days), and put my video knowledge to good use by producing promotional videos for the society - and more recently I've started helping other clubs/societies with their video woes too (mostly with AviSynth saving the day, not to mention the downloads on this site ;-) ).
