kvcd matrix

I was wondering what other people think of using the kvcd matrix. Also, to use custom matricies do you have to set the quantitization type to mpeg-custom to get the benefits of the better matrix or can you still use the H.263 and still get the benefit of the matrix?

1. AFAIK, KVCD matrix works not very well with MPEG4... :(

2. No, you have to use the custom matrix option... ;)

Tried it, doesn't beat HVS-Good. (Both naked eye as PSNR, constant quant 2 and a target filesize tested)

KVCD's "Notch" matrix was not designed with MPEG-4 in mind.
It was designed for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 ONLY!

Imho this Notch thing is greatly overhyped anyway. I believe it is because VCD/SVCD encoding has always been surrounded by myths (like that it is better than an MPEG4 rip), and strange standards (480x480 video size? Hellooo?).

I don't see it compared to HVS-Good there :D. (And I'm not interested enough in MPEG1/2 encoding to actually get all that stuff and try it myself)
