View Full Version : Relation btwn process priority and cpu usage

Hi,
As I'm a heavy user of multi tasks on my pc, I need to know if it is possible to choose the process priority of GN, as I couldn't find an option for it? And if another program takes some peaks of the cpu usage, does it affect the quality of encoding during the processing of a GN job?

Changing the processing priority of GKnot is pointless, as GKnot itself does not do any encoding. You can however change the priority of VDubMod either in the preferences and save it or when it pops up in the encoding process. And doing other tasks doesn't affect the output of the encodes, as is stated in the GKnot guide on the Doom9 website.

Remember GKnot is only a frontend(GUI integrating all tasks). So it does no process of its own and takes almost zero cpu,and only 500kB ram. Therefore nothing related to priority.

VirtualDubMod does the encoding, so you want to control that process.
If you enable the status window, there's an option to change the priority (if you choose highest, it'll lock down your system pretty much  It would be nice, though, if there would he an option in GKnot to set the default priority.
What I also find helpful is a little freeware tool PSSuspend from Systernals (http://www.systernals.com), which allows you to temporarily suspend/pause your encode.
EDIT: answer to your original question. No matter what priority (short of suspending) your CPU usage will always be 100%. A lower priority will just give more CPU to the other tasks, but you'll prolly know that.

Ow piscator, thank u so much for having given me the tip I was searching to pause virtualdub encoding process even before I asked for it, that's a vrey practical one :D !!!

If you really want to encode while still using the computer for various tasks, I'd highly recommend upgrading to a hyper-threading (HT) processor. The P4 HTs don't really give you a speed increase, but allow more functions per clock cycle. Previously, if my machine was encoding, and I wanted to use a program, it would take forever to open, check e-mail, etc. With the same processor speed with HT, I can set VDubMod to 'high', and check e-mail, burn CDs, rip, etc., with very good latency. I even play non-CPU-hog games while encoding(like NeverWinter Nights).

Angelus has already mentioned this, but I feel it needs to be emphasised a bit. Open the VirtualDub GordianKnot will be using. Then go Options --> Preferences --> Main and select whatever defaults you want there and then save it.
BTW, jp80, is that picture of that guy in Initial D?
