Windows movie maker

I've made a DV capture with Windows movie maker, Quality DV (25mb/s). the problem is when i tryed to compress it with Virtual dub but it doesn't open. This is the error message: "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd'(unknown) Virtual Dub requires a Video for Windows(VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow Codecs, such as those used by windows media player, are not suitable."

Can any one help, is there another way to compress it with xvid or divx!?

Look at DV to DIVX guide, if your file is DV type-1 you need avisynth, if it is type-2 you need a DV codec such as PanasonicDV codec

You can deal with DV type-2 in AviSynth, too, without using a VfW codec, i.e. by using a DirectShow filter instead. All you need to do is to open the AVI through DirectShowSource, just like with type-1.

Sure! But with type-2 you can even open it directly in Vdub or with Avisynth with "AVISource" command...

I just wanted to make clear that you don't need to install a DV codec. With the DirectShowSource method Microsoft's pre-installed filter is sufficient. It is not obligatory to have a VfW DV codec installed to process a DV file in AviSynth, neither for type-1 nor for type-2.

Of course it's convenient to have type-2 and a VfW codec installed. In that case you can use any VfW compatible program, among which is VirtualDub, directly.

By the way: If you need to decode the DV only, e.g. for converting to DivX/XviD, the free versions of MainConcept's and Canopus' codecs are sufficient. For encoding you need the full versions, though, else you'll get a logo included in the video.
