hey guys. I'm starting this thread for all the tivo people out there to see all they ways they convert there .ty format. Let me know what you guys use for the fastest best results on your tivo's. Hopeful we can start a new community on DOOM dedicated to the conversion of tivo files to a usable format. Enjoy

I use tytools
It keys the file and you're done
THe interesting thing to have is a tool to convert FROM mpg to .ty, so I could backup my dvds on my tivo
Also some kind of tool to extract the closed captions so I could put those CC on a dvd also.

On the closed captioning question, if you send me a sample file that you know for sure contains captions, I'll see if I can figure out the storage method and work up a tool.

here's how i take TiVo to XviD:
1) extract w/ tytool (vsplit mode) to .m2a, .m2v, .txt
2) .m2v to .d2v with DVD2AVI
3) .m2a to .wav with Winamp
4) avs script w/ decomb for deinterlacing
5) load avs and wav into tmpgenc, use source range editor to find frames for commercial cuts
6) load avs and wav into vdub, use frame numbers to cut out commercials, 2-pass encode
7) PROFIT!!!!

You DO know that deinterlacing throws away half the temporal information and screws up the video unless it was originaly a smaller framerate, don't you? Don't use it unless 100% of what you have was shot on film and then you should decomb, not deinterlace.

Try the address above (or below). If you've got an FTP where you can put it instead, that would be preferred, but otherwise we'll see if Yahoo will accept an attachment that big.

The challenge with CC conversion is the offset embedded in the stream is always relative, correct? So...any internal edits to remove content will mess up the offsets. Your editing app needs to be aware of CC when it does the edits.

Closed Captions tend to be stored as User Data packets somewhere in the GOP. The formats I've worked with so far (DVD, various MPEG-2 capturing cards, ReplayTV and Dish Network), those packets have not contained timecodes, which means that as long as you cut on the GOP, you are guaranteed to still have captions in sync. This in turn means that the step of extracting Tivo format captions and re-inserting DVD format captions must be done after editing. On the other hand, if you re-encode, you need to use a re-encoder that will not throw away User Data packets.

DVB has nothing to do with TiVo.
