What container do YOU use for archiving? - Version 2!

Well, inspired on the other thread, and since it is rather old, I've decided to post an up-to-date version of it, including the mkv container :D

So... What container do YOU use for archiving today (and why)?;)

I do full DVD Backup now.
Even though I used OGM a lot, probably I would now be a MKV user if I hadn't bought a DVD Recorder.

lol nice poll again ;) In the other poll it said "Excluding DVD" and meaning only for archiving on to CD. I don't know if you wanted something a little different , but i thought i would point this out.

VOB and DVD could both be grouped with SVCD as they are all MPEG-2 specific containers.

I'm fond of avi and mkv,both.But on certain situations I need to use mkv.(If you need to put other kinds of audio that avi doesn't support)

I'd really love to use mkv (and have used it once or twice) but I'm still not sure about compatibility (even Macs and standalones play avi - so I'm just going with the avi overhead most of the time...)

.....Archiving what?

Well, for my movie encodes (video + audio), I use AVI. But for audio encodes I'm slowly moving over to AAC MP4 from Mp3.

In the future I hope to use MP4 for all media!

I save my DV AVI files from my camcorder as data files on DVD-R. Each DVD-R disc holds 20 minutes of original avi file.

Movies and TV shows are archived as DVD-Video (mpeg2).

So I voted for DVD but I would also like to vote for "AVI on DVD". A DVD can contain all the formats as data files...

Hey ! 12 of 56 for the time being !! We are not doing bad, in fact much better than i thought ? Are there really not more people using SVCD and/or DVD ? I would have assumed its the majoritiy of the people here now, for convenience reasons ( playback on standalones ) ?

DVD burners and blanks are still expensive compared to CDs. And this site started out with DivX, which certainly has an influence. Plus, not everybody participates in polls. I dare to say that users of alternative formats are more vocal and thus participate more in polls, whereas the big majority just cannot be bothered.

I personally believe that about 30% of the users coming here use VCD/SVCD, and about the same number of people use DVD burners now.

The remaining 40% have to split in AVI/OGM/MKV/RMVB etc. users, leaving in best case 10 - 15% of the total users for MKV and about 15 - 20% for AVI .....

I think if you apply some kind of nonlinear (like gamma correction :D) stretching to the poll results, you'll end up with the real values. That is, bias towards mainstream formats (AVI, (S)VCD). I don't think AVI would come out as low as 15%. Especially not with DVD recordable media being so new (If I don't have it yet, it's new).
