I had problems with gordian knot 0.28.6 and runtimes error. So i reinstalled 0.28.3beta but i installed divx5.1.1 beta istead of 5.0.3 which comes with the rip pack of 0.28.3beta (im kind of quality freak and wanted as best encoding as possible). The staff worked but i wonder, how much do i miss of the quality of divx 5.1 because all the other staff in 0.28.3beta is outdated?

Welcome to the forum, meliritos!
You wouldn't miss out on any quality using an older GKnot. It acts as a frontend for the DivX/XVid codec. It just helps you to conveniently set the parameters you like for the encode.
Things that have a huge impact on the quality of your encode is the filters you select in GKNot (or choose to manually add to your AviSynth script). It's well described in the manuals.
btw, I wouldn't call 0.28.3 so ancient:D, it's still faily new. But there shouldn't be any problem with 0.28.6. If you want to go for 'best' quality, I wouldn't recommend using a DivX beta. It usually has some unresolved issues.

Thank you for your prompt and gentle reply. The thing is that withGK 0.28.6 i get runtime errors when virtualdubmod loads the movie part (works fine with the credits though). I succeded overcoming that problem with a # in front of the VS Filter plugin line but then i get vobsub errors and putting an # in front of line 66 lets virtualdubmod run but in the end i get no subtitles. This problem first appeared when i installed 0.28.5 and i believe that cleaning my registry will clear the problem but id like to avoid that. Is there any other way i can make 0.28.6 run? By the way i ve got windows millenium edition.

Just as a general suggestion, when i've had problems with vdub crashing or giving errors, I usually do the following:
1. Uninstall everything related to video encoding. I'm talking codecs, gknot, vobsub, virtualdub, avisynth, everything. Make sure if you've collected avisynth filters or anything you want to save that you move them out of the directories. (I leave players.)
2. Go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/gordianknot and download the latest codec pack, the latest rippack, and the latest hotfix/patch. Install the codec, then the rippack, then the patches.
Oh and DON'T use codecpacks. It just makes the codecs fight with each other, and possibly could mess up encoding (not sure, it can definitely mess up decoding). If you have one, uninstall it too, although in this case i'd be scared, you might even format if it's not too tough. EDIT: I mean things like Nimo. Gknot's codec pack is fine.
Also, I usually have miscellaneous tools sitting around like gspot, drfanalyzer, avimux, and whatever else in my Gknot directory, so I usually just delete those along with it and reinstall, but I'm pretty sure this is not necessary. Basically the idea is you want a clean system. Leaving old random Gknot parts in my experience causes problems, and when i start getting errors when I upgrade it is usually not len0x's fault, but the fact that my system is clogged up with all sorts of old stuff.

There's a button in GKnot under options to clean the registry settings. But I doubt that's the problem. Check also if your 'Program Path' settings, especially the AviSynth directory is correct. btw, it's perfectly safe to delete registry keys under HKLM/Software and HKCU/Software, as long as you leave the Microsoft keys alone.
And as bkam said, it's not a good idea to install multiple DivX versions on your system.
But the problem you describe has to do with the Subtitle filters. The credits work fine, because there are no subtitles there :) The error is also likely to occur if you use 'Preview'. So check if the 'Program Paths' for the subtitles is ok. I never used those filters myself, so can't help musch further than this.
It prolly works, if you don't burn the subtitles in the movie (which I don't like much myself). Note that you can also get the subtitles in your movie during playback if you name the subtitle files (*.idx *.sub) the same as your movie ans using the DirectVobSub plugin. You've got lots of possibilities then, e.g. changing between different subtitles, choosing the font and putting the subtitles below your movie.
