Larger Media

I've searched the forums high and low but can't seem to find the answer. I'm probably not using the right search criteria.

My question is their any DVD Media out their for the general public larger than the 4.7 gigs in standard DVR+R media? If the production companies can stick 7.5 gigs on media, why hasn't anyone moved to produce that technology for the general public. It obviously exists. Is it too expensive? I have no idea. Any feedback? :confused:

Dual layer disc (also called DVD-9) technology requires a manufacturing process. Towit: two separate layers are encoded, then glued together.

There has been a relatively recent announcement of "home" dual layer burning technology, where manufacturing is not required. Philips/MKM have announced a DVD+R technology to go to 8.5GB, see http://www.dvdrw.com/press/duallayer.htm for the press release.

There has recently been an update to the DVD+ specs. Doom9 had it in the news IIRC. Anyhow it introduces the capability to record with multiple layers allowing full DVD-9 backup. You will of course need a new writer to write. But any reader should read.
