Hi !

I would like to now which kind of computer is necessary to backup a DVD movie which such a programm like "DVD Shrink". Is an AMD 1,2 with 256 MB Ram enough ? And how long does it take to convert a movie with DVD Shrink ? 3 Hours ? Or more ? For some informations I would be very thankful.

yes
about 20 mins to copy to HD...assuming u using a dvd rom to read
another 30 mins to resize
15 mins to burn if using a 4x burner

I gotta say I prefer dvd2one, faster and easier to use.
or Nero recode cos you can compress the extras more....

Hi ! Are you sure that all goes this fast ? A friend of mine told me he would need about 4 hours to make a backup of a dvd. To copy the movie to Hard disc would not take much time, but to convert the movie to the right size (4,7 GB) would take hours. but i have to say that I have no idea which programms he is using ...

Is it true that the time it takes depends on the computer you use ? like I´ve said, I only have an AMD 1,2 ...

Yes and no. the burning and reading part will take just as long with an PII-300 as it does with a P4-3.2GHz. (well almost, you probably have slower discs if you have a PII...) The conversion part though will benefit from the increased speed of a P4 compared to an AMD 1.2GHz. On the other hand, I myself use an Athlon 1100 (slower than yours ;)) and I was extremely annoyed when DVD2AVI added the 2-pass conversion, which meant that my encoding time went up from ~20min for a normal movie of 2h to the enourmous 40min... which could be compared with my first attempt at the Gladiator - (DVD2AVI->vfApi->nandub) which 'only' took 12h to complete. Per pass. On the same machine.

on my athlon 2600 dvd2one takes about 15 mins to resize a movie
the limiting factor seems to be reading and writing from/to HD

its reading 6-7 gig and writing 4 gig......
the processor makes little difference...a 1.2 should be fine
its not like your using cce or divx or xvid.

....your friend is about a year out of date!

If your concerned about speed you might want to take a look at a combo of 3 programs.(sometimes called "The Big 3", I think) They are Anydvd, Dvd2one, and Copy2dvd. With Anydvd there's no need to put the movie on your HD. Your system you could probably copy, compress, and burn in 30-50 minutes. Just search the forum for more info.

P.S. If I told someone "hey man I could copy this but to compress it is going to take hours, I mean hours!" I'm probably just blowing them off. :D

Actually the "Big 3" normally refers to DoItFast4U, DoCCE4U and Reauthorist. Using these programs a DVD backup will have amazing quality but it WILL take hours.

You also need CCE and Authorist to use these programs.

Thanks for the correction Minister. I could see using those programs if I were re-authoring from poor quality, but to simply compress High Q for a 4.36gb backup, no thanks, I'll stick to the 30min way. Maybe that'll change if I ever get a high def tv.

as far as i am concerned the only 2 squeezing proggys
worth looking at are

dvd2one and nero recode

dvd2one is the fastest
nero recode is slower but allows you to recode the movie and the
extras at different quality settings, both will burn the movie for you. but u still need dvd decryptor to copy the dvd to hd first.

I´ve read in a german magazine that the program "Instantcopy" is the best. It is slower than DVD2One, but the backup copy has the best quality with Instantcopy. But as far as I could see, noone in this forum writes something about Instantcopy, most of you are using DVD Shrink or DVD2One. So, is Instantcopy not as good as the magazine tells ?

And could someone tell me the differences between DVD2One and DVD Shrink ? Which what program is it possible to keep for example only a part of the extras. For example, if I wanna keep "Deleted Scenes" at the extras, but not the part with the "making of", can I do this with one of the Programs ? If i would delete the part with the making of, but keep the whole menue thing, what would happen. I could choose in the extras "making of", but nothing would happen because i have deleted it, right ? I hope I could express me well, i´ve tried my best :-)

with nero recode you can pick exactly
what bits you want to keep. And also
how compressed each part should be.

Nero Recode is the latest of the shrinkers
published, and has the most advanced features.
Its so new not many people have used it yet!
