Whats the ebst way to convert MPG to Xvid?

I seem to be having a problem when trying to convert a simple MPG file to Xvid using Virtualdub. I get blocky artifacts on the ouput file no matter how high I put the quality to - its the same if I put the bitrate to 1500 or to 6000, the end result is identical and a lot lower in quality than the MPG file. I understand that there shuld be some quality loss when converting, but surely not THIS much?

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Your MPG file may be having noise.So try a noise filter and then do encoding.For better result I would suggest use of avisynth,as it has special filters for special files.

It could be something screwy happened with your Xvid settings. I saw Xvid freak out once after I played with it's settings too much, and nothing I did would fix it. Then I clicked "load defaults" and everything was OK again. :)
