Playback : MPC/ffdshow sound desync

Hi all,
I "got" an avi (xvid + mp3 vbr 131kbps 48Khz).

When i play it with MPC 6.4.6.7 + ffdshow 20030523, i have the sound desynchronized (about 750 ms at the beginning of the vid).

When i play the same vid with powerDVD, the sound sync is OK.

Does anybody know what may be wrong with my config MPC/ffdshow ?:confused:

Hi platon,

your post is more or less in the wrong forum, but try to disable the internal MPEG audio decoder and/or the internal AVI splitter of MPC and try again. VBR MP3 inside AVI is a hack and it may confuse the decoder. You can try to demux and remux with AviMuxGUI by alexnoe or VirtualDubMod. An other option is to mux the file into one of the newer containers that support VBR audio natively like OGM or Matroska.

Have you any idea of the difference of the playback through PowerDVD and the playback with MPC/ffdshow ?

Well, I guess you should've posted in the AVI player section. Nevertheless, I doubt that it's a problem with ffdshow. Did you take a look at task manager how much CPU is utilized during playback. What about Windows Media Player (preferred 6.4)? Did you try to use another renderer (overlay, VMR7/9) in the playback settings of MPC? One last thing to check that comes to my mind is, if MPC resamples to 44.1 kHz (audio settings).

Please try some more players and give a little bit more of your system specs and about the video part of your AVI (which codec, resolution, bitrate...).

I tried media player 6.4 as you suggested, and it works fine.

My system spec is a P4 1.9Ghz, 384 Mo Rambus.

The file is (as given by gspot) :
xvid 994 kb/s 23.97 fps, 640*352
mp3 131 kb/s 48khz

if ms media player is ok, it must be something with MPC, but what ? :confused:

Did you really disable the internal filters Avisplitter and MPEG audio decoder? I still think that the problem lies there. Otherwise it may be related to the renderers. Did you override the default renderer?

You're right, i must have messed up somthing yesterday, with the built-in avi splitter disabled it works in MPC.
Sorry for bothering you with this.
By the way, the same thing happens with virtualdub. There is also a built-in avi splitter in VDub or ... ?

You wouldn't really try to watch movies in VirtualDub???

Beware that version of VirtualDub from 1.4.10 and later try to 'repair' the VBR MP3 in your AVI which leads to desynced audio. VirtualDubMod allows you to chose that behaviour when editing such files. Otherwise give OGM or Matroska a chance, you'd be astonished.
