Dancing squares near the right border

Notice the artifacts near the right border of the frame. These are not present on DVD2AVI preview (first screenshot, a keyframe), but are seen on Gordean Knot preview (second screenshot, next frame to the keyframe) of the resulting .d2v file. The resulting divx/xvid file will have the same artifacts - tested.

There were no read errors during the rip with DVDDecrypter 3.1.7.0. I also tried SmartRipper 2.41 - the same result.

The keyframes are always clean. The intervals between them are clean at some parts of the movie and have "dancing squares" at some other.

In DVD2AVI, using the scroll bar or the arrow keys, you only see the I frames. I believe preview in DVD2AVI shows all the frames, but it usually moves too fast to notice anything like this.

Save the D2V project file, create a simple AVS script, then look frame-by-frame in VirtualDub. It's quite likely these blocks are present in your rip.

Usually this type of blocking is the result of read errors (flaws in the media), but it is remotely possible that the DVD was poorly encoded. If possible, try ripping the DVD on a different DVD-ROM drive. If you get no errors on two different drives and see the same blocking, then those blocks are almost certainly present on the DVD.

PS. I might recommend stepping frame-by-frame in a software DVD player from the original DVD, but I'm not certain that software players won't filter out (or smooth out) this type of error. I'm fairly certain stand-alone players will filter it out (especially if it is the result of read errors).
