16:9 header within AVI container

Hello all

There has been much discussion in the forum over this issue in recent months.

I take it the consensus of opinion at the moment is that it is possible to incorporate a 16:9 header in an .avi container. But it's not been implemented - for what ever reason!

However, it struck me today that such implementation might already exist, in the form of those new fangled 16:9 widescreen DV.avi camcorders.

So I wonder if there are any forum members who might have one of these cameras, and can tell us whether or not the header information works properly!

If so, maybe the header could be adapted for use with other avi containers such as DivX, XviD, VP6, WMV9(VCM) etc!

Ive read somewhere that AR flags (H/W flags) are already implemented in AVI container, but till now Directshow is not able to read this flags...

Cant remeber where Ive read this, but a link to this page was in the Signature of a member here !!!

Isn't MPlayer able to correctly decode anamorphic avis? I somehow lost track of it's features, so I'm not sure at the moment, but I think I have read something like that...

Don't they record 16:9 resolution directly? I think so...
Anyway, DV is using it's own raw format, it is only converted to avi when transferred to the computer...
Therefor you would have the same problems you have even with anamorphic DV-streams.

I have been playing around with this today..and managed to hack xvid so that you can choose the aspect ratio. I was able to encode 352x480 xvid avi files in windows/Vdub..and play them back in Linux/mplayer with it automatically detecting the aspect ratio and playing back at 640x480.
Seems like a good day to switch to Linux :D

I would still be interested to learn how well forum members who own 'widescreen' DV camcorders are getting on with them!

I would like to know how the DV.avi captures are presented in a typical video editing/capture software display window. As an 16:9 image in an 16:9 frame, or as an 16:9 image squashed up into an 4:3 frame?

I would also like to know what happens when the DV.avi streams are played using the Windows Media Player 9. How are they presented. As an 16:9 image in an 16:9 frame, or as an 16:9 image squashed up into an 4:3 frame?

If the former is the case, then maybe 16:9 flagging in an AVI container may be possible after all
